Guards accused of sex crimes investigated in other incidents

By Sara Jean Green and Christine Clarridge

Seattle Times staff reporters

Sexual-misconduct allegations against two King County corrections officers came to light last month after a 27-year-old woman who had been in the King County Jail was transferred to the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Purdy, said sources familiar with the case.

The woman apparently told a fellow prisoner what had happened to her in jail and that prisoner "told a friend on the outside," according to one source.

The friend contacted jail officials, who notified the King County Sheriff's Office to begin a criminal investigation.

Now, investigators are looking into the possibility that the same officers may have had sexual contact with other female inmates, sources said.

The two corrections officers, who were arrested Thursday, were released yesterday afternoon.

"They're being released pending further investigation," said King County prosecutor's spokesman Dan Donohoe. "We don't anticipate filing the case for probably another week or so."

1. Wasn't Grainer (Name, sp?) from Abu Graib (Again spelling)
accused of conducting sex crimes? Is he not of a background of running American prisons?

2. Graner was a guard at the federal prison in...
Waynesburg, PA before he was called up for duty in Iraq. After the scandal broke, local papers were filled with letters to the editor from prisoners as well as local reports of Graner's files being filled with notations concerning prisoner complaints about his treatment of prisoners. He was never disciplined (perhaps once minimally, I don't remember) for abuse because nothing was proved and most of the accusations were bullying, humiliating, same type of things he did at Abu Graib, which did not amount to physical abuse.
