Man, 44, shocked with Taser dies after struggling with Miami-Dade police

May 7, 2005
By Ihosvani Rodriguez, Miami Bureau

Authorities are investigating the death of a 44-year-old man who died in a jail cell hours after he was shocked with a Taser stun gun early Friday morning.

Miami-Dade police found Stanley Wilson standing in traffic near the intersection of Northwest 54 Street and 27th Avenue about 12:30 a.m. Friday, according to a police report.

He was acting bizarrely and uttering irrational statements, police spokeswoman Detective Nelda Fonticiella said.

Two officers tried to restrain Wilson, who is 6 feet tall and weighs 295 pounds, but he resisted by striking one of the officers while one of his hands was handcuffed, Fonticiella said. An officer, whose name police did not release, subdued Wilson by zapping him with a 50,000-volt Taser gun, police said.

2. Mental health care -- Taser --
new form of electro shock therapy --

Cops as a general rule are not trained to handle people having a mental health episode -- losing touch with reality and acting in a non conformist, and inappropriate for the situation, manner.

It seems that with cuts in funding for mental health -- or non funding of community mental health and the general IGNORANCE of the general public of crazy people -- the jails will become the new insane asylums.

The emptying of the mental hospitals started under RayGun when he was Governor in California. As if closing the Mental Institutions will solve the problem that some people need to be there.

So a big guy goes "nuts" and the cops respond with excessive force -- which is the wrong thing to for many mental health patiences. PLUS with the non treatment of returning Iraq & Afghanistan for mental health issues -- we will probably be reading (and seeing) a lot more stories likes this one.
