Religious right uses gay marriage to register voters
http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=10049&sd=10/02/03

Conservative religious groups announced Thursday that they plan to use the debate over gay marriage as a catalyst to register millions of voters. Organizers from more than two dozen groups--including the Southern Baptist Convention, the American Family Association, and the Christian Coalition--said they want to make gay marriage the number 1 social issue in the 2004 general election. They will also endorse the language of a proposed constitutional amendment to protect marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Polls suggest that the American public is closely divided on this question, with just over half supporting laws against gay marriage. The week of October 12 will be designated "marriage protection week."

5. Here's why they want to butt into other people's lives
These "religious right wing morons" are people who are too lazy to improve themselves, so they've figured out that they can feel more important by demeaning others. They know that what they do is wrong, so they deflect criticism from themselves by claiming that they're just preaching the word of god-- that is, their own "interpretation" of scripture. And, in their endless quest for validation of their twisted ideas, they seek support from other people not by presenting sound arguments, but by butting into their lives and playing on their fears.

2. Aye-yi-yi. This country is going to spit into two.
And it is NOT just going to be the south splitting from the north. How can there be such hostile people on the other side?

3. Newsflash--it ain't gonna be the #1 issue by a longshot
Americans may be in a very weird space about the marriage issue (hence the varying degrees of support for domestic partnerships vs, civil unions vs. marriage vs. nothing), but it's hardly at the forefront of their thoughts--unlike the Southern Baptists et all. (And why, pray tell, do they spend so much time thinking about it?)

At this point the average American is a lot more more interested in: will I have a job? Can I keep my job? How will I pay for health insurance for my family? What are we doing in Iraq? What steps have been taken to make the country--and loved ones--safer? Who has a vision for 2004 to make the next 4 years better than the past 4 have been?

If these social issues were bread and butter to voters, Tom McClintock would be the #1 candidate in the recall. He isn't, Arnold is, because Arnold is a moderate on social issues. If the GOP thinks stampeding further to the Right is a ticket to future success, they're in for an ugly surprise.

6. Bring it ON, Fundies !
If they DO, then Liberals and Democrats should ask Americans to choose between Liberal DEMOCRATS who believe in freedom and equality for ALL and biggoted REPUBLICANS who now want to oppress GAYS, because they are no longer being allowed by law and society to hate and oppress BLACKS, or JEWS, or CATHOLICS.
