ALHERI, Syria · On this desolate stretch of desert on the Iraqi frontier, tensions with U.S. soldiers just across the border are running so high, Syrian soldiers say, that four villagers have been shot by U.S. troops in the past month.
Soldiers guarding the Syrian side of the border said U.S. troops shot to death two cousins, one Iraqi and one Syrian, as they crossed into Iraqi territory about three weeks ago. Since then, the Syrian soldiers said two other civilians had been wounded in separate incidents this month. The Syrians said U.S. helicopters and planes routinely violate Syrian airspace while patrolling the frontier.
The events described at this Syrian border post are the latest incidents that have unfolded along the frontier, including the U.S. attack, on June 18th, on a convoy suspected of ferrying loyalists of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
That incident, which occurred along a smugglers' route about 30 miles away, and the others, are apparently being fueled by an intense rage for the U.S. presence in the villages that straddle the Syrian-Iraqi border. Among the evidence for that anger are videos circulating through the villages exhorting viewers to attack the U.S. troops in Iraq. (snip/...)
