Iraqi general killed in 'triangle of death' (drive-by)

MAHMUDIYAH, Iraq (AFX) - A senior Iraqi army officer and his brother were killed on Friday in the so-called 'triangle of death' south of Baghdad, police said.

'Brigadier general Mirza Hamza, head of the civil defence force in Mahmudiyah was gunned down in a drive-by shooting at about 2 pm,' said police captain Luay Jassem.

Mahmudiyah lies in the so-called 'triangle of death', a lawless area where Sunni insurgents carry out daily attacks against US and Iraqi security forces.
