Russia's former nuclear energy head indicted in Pittsburgh
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05125/499855.stm

Russia's former nuclear energy minister and a business partner were indicted by a federal grand jury today on charges they stole more than $9 million from the U.S., other countries and corporations that was intended to improve nuclear safety in Russia.

Yevgeny Adamov, 66, of Moscow, and partner Mark Kaushansky, 53, of Monroeville, were indicted on charges including conspiracy to transfer stolen money and securities, conspiracy to defraud the United States, money laundering and tax evasion.

The allegations cover periods before, during and after Adamov's role as energy minister. He was minister from March 1998 to March 2001, when President Vladimir Putin fired him during a cabinet reshuffle.

Before he was named energy minister, the nuclear scientist was director of the Research and Development Institute of Power Engineering -- known by its Russian acronym NIKIET -- and as the Dollezhal Institute. He returned there as a scientific leader after serving as energy minister.
