GOP senator: Ashcroft should consider recusal on leak probe (CNN)
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/10/02/leak.main/

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- John Ashcroft came under increasing pressure Thursday to recuse himself from the CIA leak investigation, with one senior Republican senator saying the attorney general should consider doing so.

Sen. Arlen Specter, an influential member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, cited Ashcroft's ties to White House political aide Karl Rove, who, at one point, had been accused of being the leaker -- a charge disputed by the White House.

Asked whether Rove's history as a political advisor to Ashcroft during his gubernatorial and Senate campaigns were grounds for him to step away from the case, Specter said "recusal is something Ashcroft ought to consider."

7. I've never liked Spector's politics, but
I've always felt he is honorable. He's more of an old-school Republican.

16. Yup... The vultures are beginning to circle overhead.
The very notion that these guys are beginning to entertain a "post-Bush" era means there is a real sense of fear and vulnerability amongst the "adults" in charge.

18. Recusal ain't enough.
The Ashcroft poison goes too deep in the dept. Only a special prosecutor will serve.

22. exactly....
... and the whole "resusal" debate is probably to deflect attention away from the idea of a special prosecutor, which is the only remedy that will suffice.

3. The Repubs Are CORNERED
They have no choice in the matter. They made national security their cornerstone issue and now they're being hoisted by their own petard. If they allow a bullshit, whitewash, they'll be nailed to the wall. If they allow a real investigation, it's going to be VERY bad for Bush. Rock meet hard place.

5. Now we see why....
The Club for Growth is running goose-stepping Pat Toomey against Specter in the Primary. Specter is simply not toeing the line, can't have that.

12. Well, Specter's Scottish, you know.
He voted "not proven" in the impeachment trial. He did not tow anybody's line then. "Not Proven" was not an option but he did it anyway!

Specter did that? It's the right thing to do,
but whatshisname who's running against him in
the primaries is going to pummel him for being
disloyal to the admininstration.

13. Let' see.. if Frist, Lott, Hagel, etc... are any indicators
that's not going to happen anytime soon. You have to look at the few with brains- Snowe, Chaffee, and Specter, for any sentiment of integrity.

;-)

It's about time a Repug jumped in on it. That it's Specter is no surprise.

Now it starts crumbling all around Dubya's head.

Although what he says IS true, Ashcroft should AT THE VERY LEAST recuse himself.

in order for him to operate "properly".
This asswipe who lost an election to a dead man could not operate a LEGITIMATE investigation into anything wnd stay within the confines of constitutional guarantees.

What a friggin' joke for a man or Attorney let alone Attorney General!

Yes, Ashcroft, I found Jesus...he thinks you are a dick.
