STAFFORD, Texas (Reuters) - Former U.S. Congressman Nick Lampson said on Wednesday he would seek the Democratic nomination to run against Republican Tom Delay in 2006 in what could be the most serious political challenge the embattled U.S. House Majority Leader has faced.

Lampson, a four-term congressman who lost a re-election race last fall after a Delay-led effort redrew his old district to favor Republicans, said voters were tired of the questionable ethics and "bitter" partisan politics of Delay.

"We need leaders who unite us, not divide us, leaders who will uphold the highest standard of accountability to the public and who recognize there is only one standard for ethical behavior," he said in a news conference outside his grandparents' home in the Houston suburb of Stafford.

Lampson said he would work for more access to health care, education and Social Security. His attacks on DeLay were light and indirect as he vowed to avoid a nasty campaign.

3. Great news!
This is one race where I urge everyone to contribute in some way. If you can't send money see if you can e-mail a few fellow activists in your community to pitch in. We need to take this seat in a big way.

4. At the very least
DeLay won't be able to run around the country raising money for other Republicans because he's going to have to fight to save his own ass.
