SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Supporters of embattled Democratic Gov. Gray Davis said they plan to file a lawsuit on Tuesday challenging the Republican-led signature-gathering process aimed at forcing an unprecedented recall election.
Taxpayers Against the Recall said lawyers would file the lawsuit, which marks the first Democratic legal salvo in the recall battle, in Los Angeles Superior Court.
The lawsuit will allege that out-of-state signature gatherers illegally took part in the effort to unseat the unpopular governor, the group said.
Davis is facing a recall vote in part over his handling of the state's growing fiscal crisis highlighted by a $38 billion budget shortfall and his management of California's recent energy woes.
Political analysts expect Democrats to try to delay the special election until March when more Democrats could be expected to turn out at the polls because of the presidential primary. (snip/...)
