WP: DeLay Tries, Without Much Success, To Duck The Media Pack
Thursday, May 5, 2005

Tom DeLay sneaks around the Capitol like a fugitive these days, using back doors and basement passages to avoid television cameras. He skips meetings where reporters might get a chance to film his answers to their questions. he makes unscheduled appearances so he won't attract a media mob and disrupt colleagues' events.

And still it doesn't work.

At 11 yesterday morning, the House majority leader made an unannounced stop at a meeting of a high-tech group. But word got out, and a score of reporters, producers, photographers, cameraman, and sound men with boom microphones were there to greet him. When he left midway through the meeting, the pack chased him down a hall and up the stairs, shouting questions about the House ethics committee, which may investigate him, and prosecutor Ronnie Earle in Austin, who already is.

"Earle says you're America's problem," a questioner shouted. "What do you say to that.?"

Delay said nothing to that. He scrambled through a crowd of tourists -- one of whom filmed the pack as it chased the Texas Republican -- and disappeared into the unmarked backdoor to his office. it was another routine morning for the former exterminator who is now the most hunted man in Congress.

50. If these reporters are hounding him...
as they say, why haven't I seen any of it on the news? Have I been watching the wrong channels at the wrong time? From what you see, or don't see on the MSM, you'd never know Tom DeLay had any problems at all.

Has anyone else seen this "incredible coverage" anywhere?

If they hounded bush to the same degree (as they should about myriad subjects) as they are supposedly hounding Tom DeLay, they we'd be getting down to the REAL problems in this country. DeLay, as disgusting and crooked as he is, is nothing more than a drop in the old bucket compared to bush. If they'd start asking bush the hard questions, maybe I'd start respecting the media again. Nah! :banghead:

Especially since they've ignored almost every story that could be damaging to Repugs. They must have gotten the word from Rove that Delay is fair game.

The MediaRaptors' behavior is becoming quite suspicious; they normally will act like this only in pursuit of wounded Democrats. Perhaps this is simply an adaptation, in light of the fact that Democrats are becoming extinct?

16. Your name is apt, because I am now wondering. Newt Gingrich
is positioning himself to run in 2008, and may well be the candidate. He does not like DeLay, at all, especially after 1998 when DeLay lead a group of Republicans to try to oust Gingrich from his leadership role.

Karma might be coming from a different direction. It's possible.

24. Blood in the water
That's what the media respond to--the big, obvious story. DeLay's toast--he's already been labeled a corrupt politician. Even if he was innocent (which he's obviously not), there's nothing he can do now to redeem himself in the eyes of the media. The narrative has already been written.

41. They smell raw meat, alright. And LOTS of blood in the water.
And there hasn't been a really good scandal they can sink their teeth into yet.

And it just might also be true that they're growing a bit more aware that there are multitudes of complaints about their conservative bias, and this is a cheap and easy way of repenting. Not at all sure of this, just what struck me. But yes. tom delay is DAMAGED GOODS. The very fact that somebody blurts out the question - are you "America's problem" means a HELLUVA lot of other people are thinking it. And when it becomes conventional wisdom, his goose is cooked. They may try to kick him sideways to get him out of the heat, like they did with trent lott, but he's DAMAGED GOODS in any case. He's becoming the true Toxic Texan. Nobody's gonna want to be seen with him. You watch.

14. OMG! What an ass!
There, away from the cameras, DeLay gave vent to his anger. Told that Democrats are seeking bipartisan support for new ethics rules, he laughed and said: "I bet they are. I'm not interested in the water that they're carrying for some of these leftist groups."

Asked about criticism of his ethics from an outside organization, he replied: "You really think a leftist group like that will have an impact on people that support me and support what I'm trying to accomplish here? Heh, heh, heh. I don't think so."

15. Funny antics of a rat locked behind gas station glass doors..
It's fun to watch him run. Then he hides from view only to return a little oilier and madder. A flash bulb pops and he jumps and scurries.

Oh, Mr. DeLay. Ever see a DEMoCAT play with its prey it brought into its house. The poor thing screeches and tries and tries and tries to flee.

You're a gift that keeps on giving.

The DFA billboards in his district are proving quite effective. I wrote a note to the Galveston County Republicon party chair and he got so excited he has replied three times over the past two days. He is quite convinced the billboards are the handiwork of George Soros, whom he claims is trying to buy an American political party. I have called him on the republiCON policy of making up facts to fit their case. Hey, common courtesy demanded I reply, the poor guy had written me three times!

22. Tell the "affectionate colleagues" that DeLay's stink is rubbing off
The only safe place in public for DeLay these days is the House floor, where he is surrounded by affectionate colleagues and journalists are not allowed to speak. Stopping in to vote after lunch, DeLay gave a brief shoulder rub to the Republican floor leader, then worked the room as his party voted down a Democratic amendment on an education bill.

53. Same here...
I haven't seen anything to indicate that they're "hunting him down". Perhaps writing about this supposed "witch hunt" is taking the place of the real witch hunt? Just enough to let people know it's not being ignored, but not enough to actually expose it to the extent it deserves. Making a molehill out of the mountain. It would fit the MO of the MSM.

I remember when the most dangerous place to be on the planet was between Tom DeLay and a camera. Now he scuttles away, avoiding inconvenient questions. He's accustomed to setting the terms of the debate, rigging the vote, and raking in the dough for his peculiar talents. Not so much fun when someone else is running the show.

But he'll probably land a sinecure show on Fox come October or thereabouts, so I'll waste no tears for this cancerous growth on the body politic.

35. My responses to FAIR and Scarbourough...
To FAIR--

"While on the surface Scarborough's response seems a reasonable apology, I see it as simply a pathetic admission that your original complaint was valid.

Scarborough is on national television posing as an expert commentator and yet has absolutely no knowledge of the background of his guest-- a guest whose comments about "head shots" and bragging about his knowledge of methods of assassination were well publicized in the past.

If Scarbourough is this ignorant about his guests, why should he be trusted about anything he comments on?"

To Scarborough--

"While on the surface your response to FAIR's complaint seems a reasonable apology, I see it as simply an admission that the original complaint was valid.

You are on national television posing as an expert commentator and yet have no knowledge of the background of your guest-- a guest whose comments about "head shots" and bragging about his knowledge of methods of assassination were well publicized in the past.

Is this indicative of the depth of your knowledge about all of the subjects you pontificate upon?"

It's only fair that a former exterminator in Washington would eventually end up being eaten alive and exterminated by his own.

We may be entering a phase where neocons all over will have to sneak into back doors and elude both the press and liberals as they continue down this road of extremist fascism.

52. What a POS Deborah Pryce is.....
"Pryce lamented that the House Republicans' passage of tort, bankruptcy, energy and class-action legislation "is not getting a ton of play." And it quickly became clear why. After the lawmakers had their say, the first questioner turned the subject to DeLay, asking about possible changes in travel restrictions for members".

This "itchbay" wants pats on the back for stabbing simple working folk in the back? She wants "megadittos" for screwing the little guy into the ground while she and all of her rich pals are whooping it up because they've succeeded (temporarily I hope) in squeezing the remaining few dollars out of the American dream? Fuck her and the elephant she rode in on.

I'm sick to death of these blood sucking pigs dancing on the purloined rights of others. :grr: This POS had better PRAY she's swept away with the coming Congressional Democratic tide, because if she isn't there are MANY that would like nothing better than to drag her fat, porcine, republican ass out physically.
