Fla. to Allow Judges to Cut Off Alimony
By DAVID ROYSE, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, May 4, 2005

(05-04) 19:09 PDT Tallahassee, Fla. (AP) --

After debating the heartache of divorce, shacking up for convenience and romantics who "still believe in love," lawmakers voted Wednesday to let judges reduce or eliminate alimony when the person receiving it moves in with someone else.

"This bill is more like a country-western song than good legislation," complained Republican state Rep. Nancy after the 68-44 House vote.
(snip)

It's a bad enough heartache when someone you love leaves, many times for another person," said Republican Rep. Dennis Baxley. "To be asked to support this ex-mate's new girlfriend or boyfriend, that is really adding insult to injury."

Several members — almost all women — said they thought the bill was unfair to women who have given a significant part of their lives to husbands who then walk out on them

"This is an anti-woman bill," griped Democratic Rep. Eleanor Sobel. "Alimony should be based on what someone has contributed to the marriage."
(snip/...)

Creative writing, rather than news reporting? Why not use "bitched" or "whined Democratic Rep. Eleanor Sobel?"

This bitch, "DAVID ROYSE," should get out of the bidness. He's not cut out for reporting. He wants to vent. This isn't the place.

1. You have a valid point about the reporter
though I must admit, I wonder how this law is anti woman. If a person getting alimony wishes to keep it all he or she has to do is live up to the spirt of alimony which is that he or she have no other support. But a straight story is what we should have gotten here.

3. Great post. Very accessible.
How insulting. I thought polite society had evolved beyong this. And yes, I know about the laws in NC, but still, I didn't think many other states would be embracing similar attitudes. Silly, Iris.
