Oak Ridge (WVLT) - Supplemental Security Income is a federal program designed to help the elderly, blind or otherwise disabled who have little income to get by.




The money goes to thousands of local residents to help them buy the basics like food and shelter.


But what happens if that money doesn't ever show up in your mailbox? That is the problem facing some recipients in Oak Ridge.

1. 20 years ago, I worked at the PO...

The SS and SSI checks came sorted by zip, and we processed them manually (at night). The checks were a breeze to sort, lots of them in a tray, but they were uniform in size. For some unknown reason, one of our dim-bulb supervisors pushed an entire hamper behind one of the work areas, and then forgot about it. About 8:00 that morning, after all the trucks had left to take all the mail to the branches, another supervisor found this hamper. It took us an hour to sort it all out; then they had to run trucks out to the branches, and call back in all the carriers who had already left for their routes. Now, we managed to get all the checks out that day. But many other times, there were just checks that didn't show up.

It's not too out-of-line to think that just maybe the PO "misdirected" part of the mail.
