In Two Roles, Spitzer Runs and Enforces
Trying to ward off any potential for conflicts of interest stemming from those dual roles, Mr. Spitzer made the highly unusual decision not to accept campaign contributions from people or companies with business before his office.
Gov. George E. Pataki - who is not widely expected to seek a fourth term as governor - has accepted thousands of dollars in contributions this year from people and businesses who lobby the state or seek state contracts or business, campaign filings show. His aides say that they do not let the contributions affect policy.

1. So the repukes are trying
to catch every thing Eliot does and Pataki is just taking the money from everyone. I don't think they could easily hurt Spitzer in NY, the guy is an idol, loved by liberals and conservatives. At the end of the article it says that former Gov. Weld (MA) wants to run if Pataki and Guiliani bow out. That could be interesting but Kerry laid the guy flat in the Senate race there and Spitzer will probably roll over him too.

they're going to try to Swift Boat Eliot's corporate crime record.

I think it would serve Eliot best to put out a book detailing his cases on Wall Street, and why holding these guys accountable is good for America, so that he can make his record more visible, undisputed, and more importantly NOT on the defensive.
