Bush's guru is prime suspect for leak

JACQUI GODDARD IN MIAMI

PRESIDENT George Bush’s chief strategist found himself centre-stage yesterday as the hunt for the "senior official" who blew the cover of a secret CIA operative turned into a political firestorm.

The White House is dismissive of claims that Karl Rove - variously described as "Bush’s brain" and "the most powerful presidential adviser in a century" - could have been the source who leaked Valerie Plame’s name to a conservative newspaper columnist. However, as the justice department announced that it had now launched a full-scale investigation into the affair, Mr Rove appeared to be having difficulty convincing his detractors that his name should not be in the frame.

"Is John Ashcroft willing to ask Carl Rove to submit to a polygraph?" asked Senator Richard Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, in a rhetorical remark delivered in the US senate.

The trouble centres on a piece written by the conservative commentator Bob Novak in the New York Times in July, which named Ms Plame as a CIA operative who specialised in weapons of mass destruction.

1. Here is the best part:
"Sources close to the former president say Rove was fired from the 1992 Bush presidential campaign after he planted a negative story with columnist Robert Novak about dissatisfaction with campaign fundraising chief and Bush loyalist Robert Mosbacher. It was smoked out, and he was summarily ousted," the article claimed.

4. it ties for best with this
Dr Mel Goodman, a former CIA analyst and senior fellow at the Centre for International Policy, said Mr Novak was targeted by the White House because they knew he would co-operate with the leak, while at least six other reporters allegedly refused to get involved.

He said: "Novak was merely what the Bolsheviks used to call a ‘useful idiot’ in this case."

5. I wish I could see Novaks face when he read that.
Sounds like a good thing for an audience member to ask him about on Crossfire...

6. Hm, he looks terrible lately
There was a recent photo of him on Yahoo news, and he looks like he's lost quite a bit more hair on his thinning head.

This sounds really vicious but, jeez is he ugly. His head is so big, it looks like a Jack O Lantern. (sorry)

I'm sure this is a very stressful time for him.

11. I think we will find out who did it, but
The crime will become a non-crime and will be swept under a rug.

Ashcroft won't trust a special proscecutor to go forward with this. After all, a non-partisian might find the leakers guilty of something.

If the justice dept was going to do anything, wouldn't they have started three months ago?

Is Ken Lay ever going to have a court date? They made sure Martha Stewart went to trial. Her mistake was not insider trading, it was contributing to the Dems. She wouldn't have even had charges brought up against her if she had contributed to the GOP instead.

At the forum held by Jay Inslee (a great congressman),
Wilson flat out said that Rove was the source of the leak.
