U. of Texas Renews Interest in Los Alamos
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - University of Texas officials expressed renewed interest Thursday in managing the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, with Lockheed Martin Corp. as a partner.

UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof had recommended in February that it drop its pursuit of the nation's largest nuclear weapons lab after a series of security breaches there and after the university failed to find a corporate management partner.

Opponents, including Democratic state Rep. Lon Burnam, want the university to back away from a relationship they say is tantamount to promotion of nuclear armaments.

1. It would be good for the Univ.
But I think the dollar outlay was going to be the issue. I live in Austin, and can see that there would be actually a boost here if the Univ. did it, but as I say, the issue is dollars, and whose they are.

3. This is texas trying to usurp power from california
This is not an innocuous thing, but rather an attempt to short
circuit the ugliest militarists in the USA to the largest nuclear weapons
lab. The relationship with University of California has been very
successul over all those years, and less inclined to be grossly
militarist.

I smell a scumbag bush maneouvre... no matter what the veneer paints
it as just a little management thing. This is texas finally trying to
establish a fort in new mexico after being defeated in the civil war
by the californians attempting to do just that... so they're attempting
to consolidate the "win" of the confederacy of civil war 2000.
