Supremacist and Church Bomber Stoner Dies

LaFAYETTE, Ga. - J.B. Stoner, an unrepentant white supremacist and anti-Semite convicted in the civil rights-era bombing of a black church, has died. He was 81.

Stoner died Saturday at a nursing home of complications of pneumonia, said Judith Ragon, the wife of Stoner's second cousin and legal guardian, Ronald Ragon.

A Georgia native, Stoner was one of the angriest voices in opposition to the civil rights movement. At age 18, he revived a dormant chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in Chattanooga, Tenn. A few years later he headed the Stoner Christian Anti-Jewish Party.

Stoner was a suspect in the 1958 bombing of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., but he wasn't indicted until 1977. The church was empty at the time of the bombing.

I remember ads in the 70s for his campaigns. In these ads he would he would say things like, "the main reason why niggers want integration is because niggers want our white women" and "the nigger is inferior to the white race".

This was on television here in Atlanta, I kid you not. Many of his cohorts have run as Republicans since his time.

All he could afford: image of the Confederate battle flag with some rant of a manifesto superimposed over it; his image in the lower right-hand corner; and his voiceover, a snarl of a hillbilly twang, raved against blacks in the most gutteral of terms. All in the space of twenty seconds.

what an old horror he was. WSB-TV would always run a disclaimer that they weren't allowed to censor political ads. He referred to then-Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell as "that Christ-killing Jew." *shudder*

A Georgia native, Stoner was one of the angriest voices in opposition to the civil rights movement. At age 18, he revived a dormant chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in Chattanooga, Tenn. A few years later he headed the Stoner Christian Anti-Jewish Party.
