Polish Priest at the Vatican Was Informer for Communist Secret Police, Official Says

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - The priest in charge of caring for Polish pilgrims at the Vatican was an informer for the communist secret police in the 1980s when John Paul II was the pope, an official said Wednesday.

An investigation into communist-era persecution of the Roman Catholic church in Poland turned up documents showing that the Rev. Konrad Stanislaw Hejmo "was a secret collaborator of the Polish secret services under the names of Hejnal and Dominik," said Leon Kieres, head of the state-run National Remembrance Institute, which investigated Nazi and communist crimes in Poland.

A number of Polish prelates including the current Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz (JP2's private secretary) were financed by the Marian Fathers to act as couriers to Polish dissidents in the run up to thecreation of the Solidarnosc political movement.

The Marian Fathers' bank manager at Midland Bank was John Bond - he ran the Reading branch a few miles down the road from Henley.

They were sued on a number of occasions in the 1960s and 70s for gross negligence by the parents of children who lived in temporary accommodation in the Catholic childrens foster homes that were run by the order in Elgland and Wales.

A number of successful lawsuits proved they had employed known pederasts - mostly convicted felons on the run from East European countries during the cold war - who then molested the kids.

The Marians were brought to virtual insolvency after being sued.

The author Piers Compton who wrote The Broken Cross - a seminal work on JP2 and the P2 Lodge - associated Hejmo with the Stasi's Markus Wolf.
