Booming economy lures Soviet Jews home, but anti-Semitism lurks

MOSCOW - Watching over rambunctious children at a central Moscow Jewish school, a four-story building filled with brightly painted menorah motifs, Sofia Savinikh says it’s sometimes hard to remember why she left home in 1991.

The Achei Tmimim Day School, run by the local Lubavitcher community, educates nearly 200 students in the Jewish faith. It’s one of about a dozen schools with dedicated curricula and kosher cafeterias in Moscow — facilities unheard of during the Soviet Union, when state-sanctioned anti-Semitism barred Jews from many jobs and schools.

Four months after returning to Moscow from Israel, 47-year-old Savinikh, a daycare provider, says the land she left 15 years ago is a changed place.

“It used to be that being a Jew was nothing to be proud of. Now I say I’m Jewish without fear.”

Not interested in your great days. I am a Catholic who grew up on a Italian/Polish/Irish community and am sick of people like you who jump on anything to trash the Jews. If you want to make a laundry list of powerful Jews in media and publishing, you have to make one for humanitarian efforts and the promotion of peace. I remember sitting in an Irish pub once when the guy on the bar stool next to me, for no apparent reason, turned to me and slurred "The Jews ... they control everything." It is an interesting analogy you use. One can hope that Jews returning to Russia will find better times than when they left. I am not sure Jews have many options left open, however.

for many Russian Jewish immigrants.

Actually, I find the analogy of an abused woman returning to her abuser offensive, and I'm quite sure that the Russian Jews in question would too. It is hardly appropriate to portray them as suffering from a pathology.

gives some idea of the Russian immigrants' experience in Israel, although the portrait it paints is rather a mild one. Some of the immigrants experienced serious problems: real hardship as a result of unemployment, lack of housing, and social isolation that in some cases took the form of violence.

In many cases, they were "culturally" Jews, but were not religious, and many were married to non-Jewish spouses, a source of considerable social problems in Israel. It seems that some have decided that they are in fact more culturally Russian than Israeli.

4. The real question is: is this an anomaly or the trend?

Certainly Russia's economy is growing faster than Israel's...but the trend here seems to be one more of dual citizenship, rather than all out immigration.

Including if you murder someone in the US and you hold or one of your parents or grandparents hold dual citizenship, you can flee to Israel and not have any fears of ever standing trial in the US.
