Venezuela moves to extradite Cuban militant thought in Miami

The Associated Press
CARACAS, Venezuela
A Venezuelan court began the process of formally requesting the extradition of a Cuban militant believed to be seeking asylum in Miami, the Attorney General's Office announced Tuesday.

The Attorney General's Office said steps were being taken to request the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles, who is wanted in Venezuela for a 1976 Cuban airliner bombing that killed 73 people. It remains unclear when Venezuela, one of Cuba's closest allies, will request his extradition.

The announcement came a day after Cuba's U.N. ambassador demanded that the United States detain and extradite Posada Carriles.

Posada's lawyer, Eduardo Soto, says Carriles worked for the CIA for years and deserves asylum because he would face possible execution if returned to Cuba.

2. sometimes I could choke on the hypocricy
What a defense!

If the judiciary of another nation used it to harbour terrorists who had blown up an American airliner, it would be enough to justify US military action.

But the US doesn't harbour terrorists; it gives sanctuary to freedom fighters - right?

4. After blowing up the civilian Cuban airliner in Barbados
where was the first place the freedom loving "freedom fighters" asked their taxi driver to take them?

The US embassy. Why am I not surprised?

The other thing is that two Barbadians taxis drivers testified - one worked at the airport and had taken these two individuals from the airport, the same day the Cubana airline was sabotaged. He brought these two people to town.

The explosion took place probably more rapidly than they had expected because they eared and saw the explosion when they were in the taxi going from the airport to town. That perhaps has provoked their extremely instable attitude. They were very, very nervous. That is what the driver reported.

And at some moment they asked the driver not to go to the hotel but to go to the American Embassy and, at a particular moment, something struck the mind of the driver. He listened when one of the individuals signalled a building, when approaching downtown Bridgetown, and referred to the American Embassy. In Bridgetown, at this moment, there were very few embassies. The US and very few countries had a representation there. We didn't at the time. This was noted by the driver because it is rather strange that somebody who is entering the country should know this, unless he had been there before.

Then they went to the Embassy, according to this driver.

Another taxi driver, from the hotel - after the Embassy, they went to the Holiday Inn - reported that, on two occasions, on the afternoon of that day, they asked him to bring them to the American Embassy.

6. Venezuela high court moving to extradite Miami Cuban militant
Venezuela high court moving to extradite Miami Cuban militant

The Associated Press
CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela's Supreme Court has begun processing an extradition request for a Cuban militant believed to be seeking asylum in Miami, the court announced Thursday.

The Supreme Court began processing the request on Wednesday for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles, who is wanted in Venezuela for treason and for a 1976 Cuban airliner bombing that killed 73 people, according to a statement released by the tribunal's press office.

Posada, a Cuban native with Venezuelan citizenship, was tried and acquitted twice in Venezuela in the 1976 Cubana Airlines bombing. He is wanted for escaping from prison in Venezuela in 1985 while awaiting a prosecutor's appeal in that case.

The Attorney General's Office in Venezuela announced Tuesday that steps were being taken to request Posada Carriles' extradition. It remains unclear when Venezuela, one of Cuba's closest allies in the America's, will request his extradition.

7. Well, if they could only do this to the Sanchez de Lozada
Former Bolivian President, ordered the massacre of over 80 bolivians in late 2003 during the water riots.
Neoliberal University of Chicago graduate who was driving Bolivia into some privatized hell-for-the-locals system.
We need to put the brakes on the Straussian cult emanating from that university in some way.

9. Venezuelan justice starts extradition proceedings for Luis Posada Carriles
Prensa Latina reports that Venezuela's Supreme Court of Justice Criminal Division has begun to consider a request for the extradition of terrorist of Cuban origin Luis Posada Carriles, who is seeking political asylum in the US.

...

The request was made as soon as the President Hugo Chavez announced the decision to seek extradition of the criminal, who escaped from a Venezuelan jail in 1985. Posada had been under arrest in Caracas for his participation in the bombing of a Cuban civil airplane in 1976, in which 73 people of different nationalities lost their lives.

...

In the opinion of Chavez and other Venezuelan authorities, the granting of political asylum to the criminal would violate UN principles and international agreements, and would contradict Washington's stated determination to fight terrorism.
