US says Iraq insurgency undiminished in past year
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N26575946.htm

WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - Iraq's insurgency remains undiminished in its capabilities in the past year despite U.S.-led efforts to crush the rebels, the top American general said on Tuesday.

"I think their capacity stays about the same," Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said of Iraq's insurgents during a Pentagon briefing. "And where they are right now is where they were almost a year ago."

Asked during the briefing "are we winning" the war, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld did not directly respond.

"The United States and the coalition forces, in my personal view, will not be the thing that will defeat the insurgency," Rumsfeld said.

"So, therefore, winning or losing is not the issue for 'we,' in my view, in the traditional, conventional context of using the word 'winning' and 'losing' in a war. The people that are going to defeat that insurgency are going to be the Iraqis."

4. Top general says US winning in Iraq, but insurgent capacity undiminished
The top US general said US forces are winning in Iraq but acknowledged that insurgents remain as capable as they were a year ago and success ultimately will depend on political and economic rather than military progress.

General Richard Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, comments came amid an increase in insurgent attacks, some involving multiple car bombings as well as larger, coordinated assaults on military objectives.

"I'm going to say this: I think we are winning, OK? I think we're definitely winning. I think we've been winning for some time," Myers told reporters.

6. "I think we are winning, OK?" said the General quite defensively
That's a far cry from 'Mission Accomplished' isn't it?

12. Analysis:Rumsfeld: Victory is up to Iraqis
Dumbsfeldt is on a roll today.
Soon we will be discussing what the meaning of "is" is.

Washington, DC, Apr. 27 (UPI) -- Is the United States winning in Iraq? Yes, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says.

"I think we're definitely winning. I think we've been winning for some time," said Gen. Richard Myers.

His civilian boss, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, took a more circumspect view of the situation. The outcome of the war is up to the Iraqis.

"Winning or losing is not the issue for 'we,' in my view, in the traditional conventional context of using the word winning and losing and of war," Rumsfeld said Tuesday at a news conference. "The people that are going to defeat that insurgency are going to be the Iraqis."

13. So why are we still there?
Heard Rummy also talked to congress about needing $$$$ immediately to support the war. Then just read a post here that Iraq is not paying our contractors. Then the plane alert at the WH, the beat goes on. Rummie & co. are blaming everyone but themselves and twisting facts as usual. I repeat often, what ugly stuff are they going to come up with to get us all scared again and pray to George to save us.

14. So then shouldn't it have been 'up to the Iraqis' to overthrow Saddam?
This is just another attempt to justify why we're losing in Iraq.

"Well it's not OUR problem! It's THEIR problem!"

If that's true....THEN LET'S LEAVE NOW!

18. And, to be frank
The losses as a percentile of world GDP tangentially reflected by the increased factor of decreases in attacks is encouraging.
