College prep funds face cuts

April 26, 2005

Disadvantaged teens may lose one of the few shots they have at preparing for a college education, and that has people like William Tandy worried about what it will mean for their future.

"What you will end up having is a bunch of kids who don't have options, don't have hope," said Tandy, director of the Upward Bound program at Wayne State University.

The Bush administration has proposed eliminating funding for Upward Bound, a federal program that helps prepare teens for college. It is one of 48 programs in the U.S. Department of Education that President George W. Bush wants to terminate.

"The elimination of these programs would have a great impact, everywhere. We are only serving 10 percent of the eligible population. What we've been asking for is more money so we can expand our service rather than eliminate it," said Geraldine Graham, director of the Project Upward Bound at OU, which enrolls 130 students from Pontiac Northern and Pontiac Central high schools, and Oak Park High School.
