Body may have been in freezer for 2 years in town near La Crosse
Man told neighbors his mother was in nursing home

LA CROSSE — Philip Schuth told neighbors his mother, Edith, went to live in a nursing home about two years ago, and that’s when neighbors stopped seeing her in her front yard pulling dandelions.

Now authorities say they believe Edith Schuth’s body may be the one they found in her son’s freezer on the weekend in the town of Campbell, near the western Wisconsin city of La Crosse.

Investigators are treating the case as a homicide and say the body could have been stored in the basement freezer for up to two years or longer.

“There’s a lot that remains to be done in terms of examining the body and investigating the situation before we can draw any conclusions,” La Crosse County District Attorney Scott Horne told reporters Saturday.

4. wow, what a winner
Schuth was being held for three counts of attempted homicide for shooting at Josh Russell, his father, Randy Jr., and Randy’s wife, Melissa, and one felony charge of concealing a corpse, said Sgt. Lee Schmitz of the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department.

Randy Russell was hit in the right shoulder and arm, with another bullet just grazing his right cheek. Melissa said her leg was grazed. Their son was not injured.

5. That's X-treme Cryonics!
But you really need to perfuse the body with DMSO and anhydrous sucrose and store the patient in liquid nitrogen.

It cuts down on freezer burn, you know.

7. or other pension related fraud.
If you don't report the death the government and the pension fund have no way of knowing.

The area, I am thinking Buffalo County in particular, has plenty of assorted shack dwelling wackos up the coolies and in the back-waters.

Philip Schuth, 52, told police his elderly mother, Edith, died of natural causes in August 2000, but he didn't tell anyone because he was afraid police would blame him.

Man Froze Mother's Corpse; Collected Her Social Security Checks

A 52-year-old Wisconsin man told authorities he kept his mother's corpse in a basement freezer for more than four years while he continued to collect her social security checks. The body was found encased in a thick block of ice in a seated position.

Philip Schuth told local police that his mother had died in August 2000. He claims he initially concealed her death for fear that he would be blamed for killing her. He said his mother's blood was already on the walls of their home from an attack by her cats years ago.

Police found a large, chest-type freezer in the basement of Schuth's house. After chipping away at the large blocks of ice, they found a human knee. The body has not yet been positively identified. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

The events that led to the discovery of the body were also bizarre. A local 10-year-old boy told his father that Schuth had hit him. The boy's father and mother went to Schuth's home to confront him. According to court documents, Schuth admitted to hitting the boy, then pulled a handgun and opened fire, hitting the boy's father three times. He was later treated for his wounds and released from a local hospital. Authorities were called in.
