Little Havana Remembers Elian (Update on cast of characters)
(snip)

While Delfin Gonzalez tends to the memory of Elian's time in Miami, the two other relatives who received the majority of media attention during the custody battle have gone on with their lives, more or less quietly.

His brother, Lazaro Gonzalez, 54, the man who cared for the boy, is a bus body technician with Miami-Dade Transit.

Lazaro Gonzalez and his family are plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit against six agents they say used excessive force during the raid. The case is on appeal before the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.

Lazaro Gonzalez's daughter, Marisleysis, considered Elian's surrogate mother by those who wanted to keep the boy in the United States, runs a beauty salon in Miami. According to public records, she married in 2003 and divorced a year later.

2. A quick-witted poster looked at a paper's photo of the Elián shrine
which had been created in the Gonzalez house, and discovered an embarrassing item they had included among his many toys and designer clothes and other gifts all laid out and arranged for visitors to the little house/museum to study.

She pointed out to the CNN Elián Gonzalez/US-Cuba Relations message board members that they had placed his little Halloween costume out in a conspicuous place, and the camera had noted it. The problem with that Halloween costume IS the fact that Elián was found around Thanksgiving, and left BEFORE the following fall. As DU'er Cat-Girl 25 mentioned, he was taken out of their house on Good Friday!

Once you mull that over, you start thinking there may be a little flim-flam surrounding the whole operation!

So now, the man who took them all to Disneyworld became Bush's head of H.U.D., then ran for and won Bob Graham's Senate seat.

Small goddamned world, isn't it?

17. Looks like you've noticed the pattern! If they don't show up,it's 'cause
you called them on it!

You just never know what will set them off, but the upshot is you'll be either directly called on some boards, or insinuated to be a you-know-what by the temporary visitors to D.U.

Bitter shame to be exposed by these quick-thinking citizens!

7. Well they only had a casual relationship with truth.
Or maybe a dolphin delivered the halloween costume for later use!

18. No doubt the dolphins did it.
They just couldn't have foreseen the right-wing losing all the court attempts, and the child going to live in his home with his father.

Are you sitting down? Here's the mural some genius created for the occassion. It's actually quite LARGE. (More to admire!)

(Is the Pope in the lower left sneering, like Clinton, or is he feeling sadness for the child's mother? I can't tell.)

Look homeward Angel now, and melt with ruth.
And, O ye Dolphins, waft the haples youth.
--John Milton

And the child sailor
was protected by the dolphins,
who resembled little angels
hovering over the little rafter.
--from a poem about Elian Gonzalez by Miami Cuban exile Jose Manuel Carballo

6. For Right-Wing Lurkers Still Raving about Little Elian...
For the right-wing lurkers still in a tizzy about little Elian being kidnapped and returned to his natural father, think about this. To have taken Elian away from his surviving parent would not only have violated Florida state law and US law, but would have set a dangerous precedent for foreign courts in child custody disputes where one parent is a US citizen and the other isn't.

For the US to have handed Elian Gonzalez over to the custody of his Miami relatives would also have seriously threatened the interests of tens of thousands of US citizen parents trying to gain or retain custody of THEIR children in civil courts in other countries. The US, by breaking treaties it had signed not only with Cuba, but also with other countries, would have been seen as a treaty-breaker and US parental rights would have been placed in jeopardy.

Thoughtful people DON'T thank you for the threat YOU supported to keep American children away from their American parents.

8. A Miami Herald article with more info:
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/breaking_news/11458030.htm

Marisleysis Gonzalez Moreno
Elián's second cousin

…González, now 26, has found success with Marisleysis Hair Design beauty salon in Westchester, which she opened in 2002 at 7383 SW Eighth St.

Two years ago, she wed Richard Moreno, then 19, according to Miami-Dade County records. Some who know her say the marriage is over, but records do not reveal a divorce.

Asked about her marriage, González begged off: ``I'm working, I have to hang up now.''

Donato Dalrymple
Fisherman who found Elián

…Dalrymple, 45, of Fort Lauderdale, still runs a janitorial service company. He said he has since divorced and lost his mother in a car accident. He and his cousin, Ciancio, who felt the boy should be returned to his father, had a falling-out and are not speaking.

He still visits the Gonzálezes in Miami-Dade. Otherwise, he said, ``I've moved on.''

10. Sam Ciancio, the man who actually saved Elián, visited him in Cuba
Elian's rescuer visits him, finds he is 'joyfully happy'
By BILL DURYEA

© St. Petersburg Times, published December 2, 2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sam Ciancio, the fisherman who plucked Elian Gonzalez from the sea a year ago, recently returned from a visit to the boy's home in Cuba more convinced than ever that "Elian is back where he belongs."

Ciancio and his 18-year-old son spent three days around Thanksgiving with Elian and his family in Cardenas, a resort town two hours east of Havana.

While South Florida was preoccupied with the unresolved presidential election, Ciancio saw firsthand how the boy who was once the biggest story in Miami was faring five months after he left the United States with his father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez.

"Elian's doing excellent," Ciancio said this week. "He's as happy as he can be. He was joyfully happy."

"I don't agree with everything down in Cuba," he said, "but Elian is back where he belongs."

11. Marislutios RUNS A BEAUTY SALON???????
You have GOT to be kidding! What does she specialize in ... post-weeping/fainting raccoon eye avoidance?

And poor old Dumbnutto the fisherman cleaner -- it's a wonder he doesn't have some sort of executive appointment in the BFEE.

13. Small, but interesting factoid: The man who jumped into the water,
Sam Ciancio, could not swim!

Just learned about this in a search. Here's the quote from the Guardian:
Sam Ciancio
Despite not being able to swim, Mr Ciancio dived into the ocean to save Elian. The 41-year-old roofer and avid fisherman faded into the background and cut ties with his cousin, Mr Dalrymple, because of the circus-like atmosphere that surrounded the fight over Elian.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here he is with the loon we saw continuously, his cousin, Donato Dalrymple, who TOOK CREDIT FOR RESCUING HIM. Apparently Sam was shunned right away when it was known he believed the child should be returned to his father.
