FAITH in Tony Blair was pushed to the heart of the election campaign yesterday as Charles Kennedy presented the May 5 poll as a "referendum on trust", and Michael Howard branded the prime minister "a liar" over Iraq.
The Liberal Democrat leader played his party's trump card: the question of the trustworthiness and judgment of the prime minister on Iraq. He called for a full-blown inquiry into "the full political, legal and strategic advice given to ministers before the war and the decisions taken on the basis of that advice" as had happened after the Falklands conflict.
Mr Kennedy also demanded the full advice of Lord Goldsmith be published after its key elements were supposedly leaked and purported to show that the attorney general initially thought waging war could be adjudged illegal.
Lord Goldsmith's office reiterated how the government's chief legal officer had advised ministers that the war was in fact lawful. But it also pointed out his full legal opinion would remain confidential, protected by professional privilege.
As one opinion poll put Labour six points ahead of the Tories, a leaked memo, from Alastair Campbell, Labour's election supremo, to party strategists said the job was "largely done" on winning policy arguments, but warned: "There is a strong risk low turnout could hit us very hard indeed."
