By MARC HUMBERT, Associated Press Writer

ALBANY, N.Y. - Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld has had discussions with New York Republican officials about a possible run for governor or the U.S. Senate next year in the state where he has lived since 2000, a top GOP official said Sunday.

The party official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said there have been staff-level discussions between the two camps and direct conversations between at least one other top GOP official and Weld.

The primary interest is in Weld running for governor, the source said.

The talks between Weld and New York Republican officials were first reported on Sunday by New York Magazine in the issue of the weekly that hits newsstands on Monday. The magazine said Weld has been telling associates that GOP leaders approached him about running

5. Apparently Sam Houston
I remember this being asked once before by someone, and the answer turned out to be Sam Houston, who was governor of Tennessee before moving to Texas (then in Mexico) and helping lead the fight for Texas independence, after which he served as President of the Republic of Texas then governor of Texas.

3. As a New Yorker,
if this guy (WHO?) runs against Spitzer, you will see the greatest landslide in history for Spitzer. The Republicans in New York have no clue - absolutely none. If Rudy couldn't beat Spitzer (according to polls), you think some unknown will?

4. He won't survive a Republican primary
Whoever Weld's opponent is will kill him among the GOP hardcore by reminding them that Weld appointed half of the "liberal" judges on the MA Supreme Judicial Court who made gay marriage legal here. Repukes never mention it but all but one of those dreaded activist judges were appointed by Republican governors.

6. He can be a charmer, but he has some real BAGGAGE
He unloaded the old lady in his move to NYC. And he couldn't boot Kerry from the Senate, though he tried like hell, and it was close. The right Democrat could crush him like a bug, but I would warn them not to underestimate him--he has personal qualities that will resonate outside of NYC, and even within NYC. A massively quick wit and pleasant temperment....

7. Spitzer will spank him soundly
Funny that Pataki is so unpopular that they're trying to come up with a replacement for him in the primaries, though.

I like Bill Weld--Jesse Helms hated him

9. He's very smart and very likeable
A true Blue Blood who has a knack for charming the Blue Collars.

He has absolutely no interest in actually governing New York (he wants to be president) but since when has that stopped anyone.

What has he ever done for NY that wasn't against it.

11. What a wimp. Republicans trashed him on Amb. to Mexico.
He's like McCain. No matter how hard they thump these moderates, they keekp coming back, like they must have that approval. Sad. If he ran as a Democrat it would make sense, given New York's desire to have a great leader, where ever they're from (it's an Ellis Island thing, you wouldn't understand).

I understand he doesn't have anything to do these days, and he apparently doesn't object to carpetbaggers...

13. I doubt New Yorkers would be interested in him...just the GOP machine nt
I'm a New Yorker, and I think people had enough of the GOP running the governership for awhile after too many years of Pataki. Spitzer is exciting to most people.

Although Weld would be an attractive candidate otherwise (to some swing voters), most will see him as an opportunistic, out-of-state character trying to become Governor of every state he lives in. It's a little too much..
