COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A poll released Friday says that more Ohioans disapproved of the job Gov. Bob Taft is doing than any governor in the poll's 24-year history.

The Ohio Poll, sponsored and conducted by the University of Cincinnati, found that 55 percent of those surveyed disapproved of the way Taft, a Cincinnati Republican, was handling his job. Thirty-four percent approved of Taft's job performance and 11 percent neither approved or disapproved. Taft's previous disapproval rating in the poll was 43 percent in February 2004.

The telephone poll was taken March 21-April 10 among 846 adults statewide. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The previous highest disapproval rating was Taft's 50 percent rating in April 2003. Democratic Gov. Richard Celeste holds the all-time low for approval — 32 percent in April 1983. However, 23 percent neither approved or disapproved so Celeste's disapproval rating was 45 percent...

2. The article should say in AT LEAST 24 years.
It could be the highest approval rating ever because the poll is only 24 years old.

John J. Gilligan

WikipediaJohn J. Gilligan

(Gilligan is the father of Kathleen Sebelius, the current Governor of Kansas. They constitute the first father-daughter pair of governors in the United States)

John Joyce "Jack" Gilligan (born March 22, 1921) is a Democratic politician from the U.S. state of Ohio who served as its 62nd governor.

Gilligan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1943 and the University of Cincinnati in 1947, serving in between in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean. 21. "Jack" Gilligan
At 84, he's an active member of the Cincinnati Board of Education (which runs the public schools) and quite involved in progressive politics. One tidbit about his race for Governor; he
won that race by LESS than one vote per precinct. Ohio has about 11,600 precincts; IIRC, his margin was around 10,000.
Luck'o'the Irish, I guess. :-)

10. Did you hear yesterday Lee Fisher had put a hold on a website
for "if" he decides to run for Governor? We have got to get the state party to make their pick clearly known, so we do not have a primary. Coleman is already out there, a decision needs to be made quick.

Edited on Fri Apr-22-05 02:34 PM by theHandpuppet
Which is why I'm thoroughly baffled that Ohioans voted him into office by a comfortable margin. He's totally failed Ohio and is an embarrassment to anyone with an IQ over 35. If the Dems can't run any neghborhood dog that could beat Taft by double digits, I really and truly give up on my home state. At least here in WV we have two Dem Senators and a recently-elected Dem governor. I don't know what Ohio's excuse is, unless the state has gone brain dead and a majority really and truly want their state to continue on its journey down the shitter.

24. I'm in Toledo and
I think the main reason Taft was re-elected was because the Democrat didn't have any money - his main source of advertising was his freakin website! Meanwhile, Taft had so much money that he ended up giving a good chunk to other repukes campaigns!
For every 6-8 Taft TV or radio ads you'd be lucky to see one Hagen ad. All Taft's ads called him "Tax-em Tim Hagen" & said if he was elected he would raise taxes.

So what do you think was the very first thing taft did after the election?

30. I think you're right, Taft was so hugely overfunded in comparison.
It was disgusting as a Toledoan to watch the 'recount' effort by the Green Party, everything that could be done to discourage and make it impossible to tell how truly accurate it was done.

And now we have been watching Blackwell play shift and push with the vote board locally.

16. Actually, Polls Like These Depress Me...
...because no matter how unpopular these guys get, they always seem to get re-elected anyway. I just can't understand it.

Taft had no business getting re-elected the LAST time, yet he got something like 55-60% of the vote.

Bush was the first sitting President to have an approval rating dip below 50% IN HIS RE-ELECTION YEAR, yet he somehow got 51% of the vote...

Sen. Jim Bunning was exposed as a madman, yet STILL got re-elected...

George Pataki somehow got re-elected in 2002. A week later, his approval rating was shown to be in the high 30's...

Jeb Bush was disliked by half of Florida by 2001, mostly because of Election 2000. He got 54% of the vote and was re-elected...

When are we going to WAKE THE HELL UP?? It's not enough to just bitch about these cretins. It's not enough to whine when these elections seem so obviously fixed. We have to, somehow, get the point across that we will not be governed by someone we don't even agree with -- even if we have to drag them bodily out of White House, state house, court house, outhouse, or what-the-fuck-ever... :nuke:

26. Well, OH Is The Home State for Diebold
When it comes to Republicans, you have to add in the Diebold Factor (DF). Here's how it works:

Before Diebold
Republican Office Holder Approval Rating = 40%

After The Diebold Factor(DF)
Republican Office Holder Approval Rating = 51%

31. Columbus Dem mayor/candidate for governor confronts radio jackass
Edited on Sat Apr-23-05 08:54 AM by Algorem
Mayor, radio host go at it

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Mayor and Democratic candidate for governor Michael Coleman said Friday that his bout with nationally syndicated radio host Glenn Beck over an alleged sexual assault at a Columbus high school should not interfere with a police investigation of the matter.

The assault and the city's response has been the subject of Beck's radio program this week. It is aired locally and draws 100,000 people during the week, said Steve Konrad, WTVN radio's program manager.

Coleman said he would have preferred to avoid the program but he "just couldn't bite my tongue" over Beck's three days of "blasting the city."

"It didn't end up well," Coleman told The Columbus Dispatch for a story published Friday...

Mayor Calls Radio Show Host Over Alleged Sexual Assault

Coleman Debates Issue With Beck

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The controversy surrounding the handling of an alleged sexual assault at a Columbus high school continues to draw attention.

On Wednesday, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman called the Glenn Beck national radio show after the issue was brought up on air, NBC 4's Elenora Andrews reported.

The mayor's staff was listening when Beck questioned why more wasn't being done, and Coleman called in to give his side of the story.

Coleman said he was mad and wasn't going to take listening to Beck, who does not live in Columbus, so he picked up a phone...

Teen Appeals Expulsion After Alleged Sex Assault
Senior Expelled For Allegedly Taping Act

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- One of the teens expelled after an alleged sexual attack last month at Mifflin High School is appealing his expulsion, NBC 4's Elenora Andrews reported.

A ninth-grade special education student claims she was forced to perform oral sex on at least two boys at the high school auditorium while others reportedly watched the acts and another student allegedly videotaped it.

The teens in question were expelled. But one, who had a Dayton-area pastor as a spokesman and his mother by his side, spoke publicly Thursday about the alleged incident.

The high school senior was expelled for allegedly videotaping the incident...

Talk Show Host Discusses Mayor's Comments With NBC 4
Beck Says He's Outraged

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- National radio talk show host Glenn Beck said Thursday that he remains outraged by Mayor Michael Coleman's responses regarding the handling of an alleged sexual assault at a Columbus high school.

For more than a week, Beck has questioned the Columbus Public School's handling of the alleged assault inside the Mifflin High School auditorium.

The district came under scrutiny after a developmentally disabled girl was allegedly sexually assaulted last month by a group of boys, NBC 4 reported. Administrators then failed to call the girl's father, police or any child protective services, NBC 4 reported.

The school's principal is in the process of being fired and three assistant principals were suspended for 10 days for failing to contact police, NBC 4 reported...
