Eleven States Have Waiting Lists for AIDS Drugs
WASHINGTON (Reuters) Apr 21 - More than 600 low-income AIDS patients in 11 U.S. states are on waiting lists for medicines as funding for assistance programs falls short, a report released on Wednesday said.

Ten other states have had to limit drug coverage or take other steps to control costs for their AIDS Drug Assistance Programs, or ADAPs.

But 11 states had to close enrollment, leaving 627 patients as of March 2005 on waiting lists for prescription drugs to suppress the HIV virus that causes AIDS.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if we can find 81 billion every year for Iraq, we can find the approximately 10 million dollars needed to make sure no one has to wait for HIV drugs.

2. This is a goddamn crime in this nation...
Last night, as I was pulling into the grocery store, there was a homeless couple with a dog and sign, asking for help. They looked hungry, and not in the 'haven't eaten today' sense, they looked like they were STARVING.

I told my wife later, and she asked, "why, in America, are people hungry?"

Off-topic, but it's the same goddamned thing. How a nation can claim to be founded in Christian principles and allow this kind of inhumanity is disgusting.

9. Because capitalism trumps religion
Particularly when religious leaders are lining their pockets by exploiting the weak and partnering with corporate interests. Not to mention that some faiths actively teach that the poor are that way because they haven't surrendered themselves to god, or because of the sin in their life.

18. I agree with you...
the ones claiming the loudest about being a "Christian Nation," are doing it for money, and power. If they really wanted to follow the teachings of Christ, they would be trying to help couples like that out of poverty, help them find housing, food, jobs...

Instead, they just want to tell the rest of us how to live, and puff up and talk about how holy THEY are. They are not real Christians. For them, it's mostly about sex, women's reproductive rights, and keeping people in a vegetative state alive by artificial means.
All of the moaning and sobbing they did for Terri Shaivo, and not a second of time or one red cent to give to people who have self awareness, but just need help. They are disgusting.

3. Don't forget the 3 million Africans who died this year...
...because the multinational drug companies insist on protecting their drug patents. These companies won't allow cheaper generic versions of their life saving drugs go on the market so that more dying Africans can have access to them.
With cheap generic AIDS drugs, instead of another 3 million deaths next year, we might only have 1 million.

Get the picture?

I am a long term survivor of AIDS who owes my survival to ADAP and my disability pension insurance. I feel distressed on a daily basis knowing that my HIV+ brothers and sisters in Africa are dying because they aren't Americans.

6. Good point and
I would like to add that many of our American brothers and sisters will be dying like those in Africa because they're not rich.

11. You got that right, Lefty Mom.........
I lost my brother to AIDS. I support our local clinic because I know the government won't and most AIDS clinics get very little money when the government does come through.

8. What a disgusting state of affairs.....
You'd have to be seriously rich to pay for those meds without insurance. Even with insurance, the co-pay hurts many who barely survive paycheck to paycheck.

about money being sent from the USA to other countries for AIDS (and guess how much it was btw ... $10 million exactly) I was called a freeper. Seems Clinton sent a bunch overseas via his "foundation" very recently.

The whole thing makes me sick! Americans here at home should be our priority I still contend. Those overseas need help too, but why can't some of these other countries help out more too?

16. I wouldn't call you a freeper
But the AIDS problem in Africa is pretty bad, too. It started there and has had more time to do more devastation. Clinton is right to help with private money.

AIDS in this country is a matter of public health. There should be better funding for the medications, and obviously, enough manufactured to go around. We need some type of universal medical coverage for people, in order to ensure that people can afford the prescriptions-that's above and beyond AIDS. Cancer patients need that help, too.

Some american communities and health care providers do have good AIDS programs. The ones that work need to be implemented in the areas that the programs are either non-existent or non-functioning. AIDS/HIV prevention always needs to be stressed. Most people get it through sex-there are ways to prevent transmission. Lots of people ignore them. I have a friend that died of it who got it from being irresponsible, engaging in promiscuous behavior when he knew the risks. He didn't use condoms, either. He didn't deserve to suffer and die for sleeping around, but he also could have been more careful and prevented contracting the virus to begin with.

15. Great Link on this topic here, and a list of the 11 states.
The 11 ADAPs with waiting lists, totaling 627 individuals, were Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Wyoming. In general, those states serving the greatest number of people living with HIV/AIDS do not currently have waiting lists in place and tend to have more generous access to their programs.
