WASHINGTON - Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record) collected more than $100,000 from Florida donors during the first three months of 2005, when the Pennsylvania Republican maintained a high profile in the fight over Terri Schiavo.
Santorum received the bulk of the money — $84,300 — on March 31, the day the Florida woman died, according to an analysis by PoliticalMoneyLine, a campaign finance tracking group. The $84,300 was raised during campaign stops March 29 and 30 in four Florida cities, the group said.
While in Florida on March 29, Santorum prayed outside Schiavo's hospice room with her parents, Robert and Mary Schindler. Santorum was back in Washington when Schiavo, 41, died.
According to PoliticalMoneyLine, Santorum's campaign reported receiving $104,500 from individual donors and political action committees in Florida during the first three months of this year. Of the total received the day Schiavo died, about $42,000 came from a March 29 dinner in the Miami area. The rest largely came from fundraisers in Tampa, Orlando and Palm Beach sponsored by groups such as the executives of Revlon and the PAC of Outback Steakhouse
