Mexico City mayor labels Fox a "disgrace"

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (Reuters) - A leftist presidential favorite embroiled in a tooth-and-nail fight with the government accused President Vicente Fox on Thursday of betraying the democracy he brought to Mexico.

Angry at being outmaneuvered by Fox's conservative party, Mexico City's mayor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said Fox was using dirty tricks to keep him out of presidential elections in 2006.

"President Vicente Fox is a disgrace," the mayor told 5,000 cheering supporters at a rally in the western city of Guadalajara. "He is a traitor to the cause of democracy."

Fox's government has encouraged a charge of contempt of court against Lopez Obrador in an obscure land dispute that might force him out of next year's elections. Polls give him a strong lead.

2. and the usa has a heavy hand in all of this...

Obrador will not play the diplomat with the usa...and the usa does not want him to become president...mainly what bushco wants is to privatize the oil in Mexico..and fox will not do it...even fox will not do it...but new elections coming up...the usa must have someone more agreeable to privatization...not less...wich would be the case with Obrador. The Mexican people expected this...and we will see how it plays out. They despise busco, by the way..ha!
