Desperate Bangladeshi mother puts eye on sale
No price set, but woman seeks funds to feed daughter.

DHAKA - A Bangladeshi woman desperate for money after she was abandoned by her husband has offered to sell one of her eyes.

“I desperately looked for a job to live with my two-and-half-year-old daughter, Meem,” the woman, 26-year-old Shefali Begum, told Reuters on Thursday at her slum dwelling in Dhaka.

“But I could not find any ... and decided to sell one of my eyes. What do I do with both eyes while my daughter will die for want of milk and food?

1. No one had a comment?
Thank you for this post Vektor. Obviously this matters to you, it does to me also. I have contacted the embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, someone there must know how/where to find/send help for this sad woman.

Reuter's makes it sound as if the people of Bangladesh just miss a meal sometimes with the statement "Nearly half of Bangladesh’s more than 130 million people live in poverty, unable to get two meals a day." How misleading!! George Harrison organized the Concert for Bangladesh in 1972, and things aren't that much better over 30 years later.

7. Certainly, I've also contacted Reuters and am
looking for more to check out. I feel so compelled to do something. I know it's only one mother and child, but that is all I can do, it's all any of us can hope for. Thank you. I'll let you know.

3. There are two problems... the poverty in that region
and the fact that her husband sees fit to leave her and not support their child...but then again...it is a daughter and we know how much that region of the world just loves and respects women.

I wonder if he didn't leave her because the child was a girl???

4. the poor and desperate, versus those who would cannibalize them
Anyone who induces some vulnerable person to sell his body parts deserves to be burned at the stake.

Anyone who accepts one of these organs deserves to be burned at the stake.

Any surgeon who takes part in this trade deserves to lose his medical license. Just before getting burned at the stake.

But being a humanitarian sort, I will instead suggest lifelong imprisonment for these modern cannibals.

5. And yet you can be sure...
... some enterprising capitalist is ready to take her up on the offer. Hey, it's basic supply and demand, right? Let's hear it for the nobility of the free market soul! Oh right... what soul?
