Chicago: A Vietnam veteran said in a statement published Thursday that he spat chewing tobacco juice in Jane Fonda's face at a book signing in Missouri as payback for her anti-war stance in the 1970s.

"She is a traitor," Michael Dean Smith, 54, told the Kansas City Star newspaper.

Fonda declined to press assault charges against Smith, telling the Kansas City, Missouri newspaper in a statement: "It was a minor incident at a really wonderful evening, and I think the authorities have better things to do than press charges against this man."
