Bush Urges Action 'Now' On Energy: House Approves Drilling
in ANWR

President Bush said yesterday that his national energy policy would not lower gasoline prices anytime soon, but called on Congress to pass it by August to begin weaning the nation from imported oil and transitioning to alternative sources of power and fuel.

"I wish I could simply wave a magic wand and lower gas prices tomorrow," Bush told the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "But we must act now to address the fundamental problem. Our supply of energy is not growing fast enough to meet the demands of our growing economy." The average retail gasoline price hit a record $2.28 per gallon last week.

As Bush spoke, the House began debating an energy bill that includes $8.1 billion in tax breaks, mainly for big energy companies; permits oil drilling in part of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; and provides legal protections to producers of the gasoline additive MTBE, which is blamed for contaminating drinking water.

In a move aides described as a shot at House Republicans, Bush said, "With oil at more than $50 a barrel, by the way, energy companies do not need taxpayers'-funded incentives to explore for oil and gas."

1. i have no idea what the hell is going on with gas prices in my town, but
something really stinks. during the last week, prices dropped from over $2 to $1.94 for one day at SuperAmerica, then yesterday jumped inexplicably to $2.14. it's like they are artificially dropping the prices on the days that they're being monitored, then jacking them right back up again the next day.

3.  Bush Urges Action 'Now' On Energy: Bush Urges Action 'Now' On Energy:
Bush has been aggressive to what is going on. His "market" presidency assumes that the market will fix things. Now he is demanding that Congress pass his so-called energy bill which even the WH admits is not going to fix our problems (very little incentives for renewable resourses and big money to big oil companies-thinking they are incentives for them to dig and drill).
What a joke he is!!

5. Here's a simple thing to try
All the oil currently coming out of the Alaska pipeline? Let's send it to West Coast refineries and sell it here in the United States rather than diverting a substantial portion of it to Asia just because the oil companies can get a better price there.

I seem to recall that the big oil companies reported record profits last year, so it won't be any grave inconvenience for them to help out a little bit with ensuring America's energy independence, right?

7. There's really not much to figure out, actually
Unless he' s talking about war, or executions, or reducing rights, or giving out more tax cuts for the wealthy, you can always count on him to take a course that is the direct opposite of his rhetoric

10. Just another Orwellian phrase he slipped in there, to make it look
as if this is just a side effect of the "hard work" he's doing on the economy! These code words are really getting on my nerves, too.

9. anybody believe this bullshit??
"to begin weaning the nation from imported oil and transitioning to alternative sources of power and fuel. "

This is pure bullshit for the stupid masses. It make AWOlbush look like he's actually doing something about the currect problem.. He's not!!

Tough decisions about peak oil will have to come from someone other than AWOlbush and this corrupt admistration..

I wish there was one democrat who would call this statement the BS it represents!!

11. Houston Chronicle: "...about-face from his rhetoric in 2000"
Bush says he lacks power to control rising gas prices
Admission is an about-face from his rhetoric in 2000

WASHINGTON - With gasoline prices spiraling up just before the summer holidays, President Bush conceded Wednesday there is little he can do to help.
....
But Bush's admission that he lacked the power to lower prices was a notable turnaround. Bush promised as a candidate in 2000 to pressure oil producers to increase supply and drive down prices.

"I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply," Bush said outside of Detroit in June 2000.
