44 Tampa workers punished for lewd e-mail
Apr 19, 5:44 AM EDT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Forty-four city employees have been disciplined for sending e-mail containing sexually explicit and suggestive photographs on their work computers.

"It puts them on notice," human resources Director Sarah Lang said Monday as she announced disciplinary memos placed in personnel files. "If they have repeated violations, they're going to have harsher discipline."

The employees include a fire captain, 19 police employees, urban planners, purchasing department workers and water department customer service representatives. About two-thirds were women. No department heads or top administrators were among the disciplined workers.

The city launched the review after four parking department workers, who were fired last year for harassing and inappropriate e-mail, said other employees sent questionable content as well.

2. Same at my husband's company -- saw it happen to a bigshot manager
It didn't matter that this person was an integral part of the company -- was out the next day.

3. At a very large company...
They recently ran a 30 day trial of "WebSense", a program that monitors all Internet traffic, especially the web, and gives reports on IP number and resolves them to a hostname. Well, after 30 days, there found a huge number of requests for porn sites, including some involving S&M and feet.

The largest group represented in this, and the one that stuck out the most? Executive-suite computers.

12. Government employees are often protected by civil service rules
It is usually pretty hard to fire them, unless they do something really bad, or commit multiple offenses.

4. Seems the four fired parking department workers have a cause of action
They were penalized far more harshly than the forty-four for presumably the same behavior.

5. I know of someone from Tampa
who worked for the gov who is in jail right now for looking at porn while at work.

There does seem to be some discrimination here?

6. Inequities in the justice system in Florida?
Unbelievable. (I hope you know I jest.)

Were the circumstances similar for this person?

9. He managed to clog up
their mainframe server with all the images he had been downloading. That was how they found out what he was up to.

8. I have a question.
First, let me say that you have to be really stupid to intentionally do private, personal stuff on the Company computer! I wasn't in the IT business, but as a Director, I had responsibility for the IT Dept personnel. As such, I had supervisor access. I can't tell you how many secret office romances were going on via internal emails, and employees saying derogatory things about the Company! NOTHING done on a Company computer is secret!!!!

The question I have about the porn sites involves "unintentional porn access". I get some very graphic porn stuff sent to me here on my home computer, and it's completely UNSOLICITED! There are also porn sites that intentionally use familiar site names but a .com instead of a .org or .gov . I'm sure quite a few of the employees cited for abuse really were just stupid and misusing the CO. equipment, but could it be that at least some are being diciplined unfairly because this junk was either sent to them or accessed by accident?
