Providence Police Officer Dies After Being Shot Inside Headquarters
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBLXBR8N7E.html

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence police detective was fatally shot while questioning a suspect inside department headquarters early Sunday, the mayor's office said.

A suspect was in custody in the shooting of 27-year veteran James Allen, Mayor David Cicilline's office said in a statement. The suspect was not identified and additional details were not disclosed.

The last time a city police officer was shot to death was in January 2000, when Sgt. Cornel Young Jr., off duty and in plain clothes, was killed by fellow officers who mistook him for a suspect.

doing a press conference now.

The suspect had shot the officer with the officer's own "service weapon."

Just saying the suspects name is Estaphan Caprio. I think I got that right. He was in custody after stabbing an 87 year old woman.

After shooting the officer Caprio leaped out of a third floor window and was later apprehended.

Yikes. The cops and the mayor are totally bummed. Sounds like this officer was really well loved and a real ace. They're describing the cop as a "gentle giant."

Can't imagine how this transpired. . . as in how a veteran cop could possibly lose control of his weapon while interviewing a violent dude.

6. Pray tell what the NRA has to do with this
he was shot with his own weapon which usually is how about 25 percent of the cops are shot.

5. Police are supposed to place their weapons into a secure locker ..
Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 11:27 AM by Trajan
when they escort suspects into the station, are they not ? ...

So: arguments as to why or if cops should or should not have guns are moot, since IF he would have placed his gun into a secure locker, the suspect WOULDNT have obtained the gun which he used against this officer ....
