DeLay Borrows $100,000 for Re-Election
By SUZANNE GAMBOA

Saturday, April 16, 2005

(04-16) 13:14 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

The ethics troubles of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay have not hurt his ability to raise money for his re-election.

In the first three months of this year, DeLay's personal campaign committee took in $438,235, including $100,000 he borrowed personally for his campaign, according to the latest records from the Federal Election Commission.

The loan was from Southern National Bank in Sugar Land, Texas, according to his quarterly campaign finance report filed late Friday. DeLay still owed $88,330 on the loan at the end of March.

The Texas Republican also paid off some large bills, including $67,237 to American Express, $48,931 paid to Richardson Consulting Group of Washington, D.C., and $16,986 to Conquest Communications Group in Virginia. The latter two are political and media consulting firms.

1. The article tries to convey Delay is still a big money draw BUT
if he can still get all the money he wants from donors, why is he borrowing and why is his borrowing rating a story?

Not surprised to see Perry and the Swift Boat Smearers have kicked in again to Delay's money machine.

3. If a person borrows $100,000 to get elected to something
It stands to reason that they would expect to make much more in return, eh? Wonder if a bank looks at some sort of 'business plan' before they decide to loan that much for a politician's campaign...

Did the Founding Fathers intend for Congressmen to get rich due to their office? Did they intend for campaigns to be seen as business ventures?

Just got a bit more disgusted at the state of our government thinking about all this...

4. I think the "Founding Fathers" intended that
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 05:32 PM by SimpleTrend
Congress was to be unpaid, volunteer work.

"...nor shall any person, being a delegate, be capable of holding any office under the United States, for which he, or another for his benefit, receives any salary, fees or emolument of any kind."

5. Interest free loan? Something he knew if he delivered for the bank
in lessening of regulation he would never have to repay?

Seems likely, given what I read about Hastert and his gig at Abramoff's "Toney New York Restaurant," called "Signatures," where he didn't pay the bill until he was caught.

WASHINGTON — A legal defense fund established by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican, has dramatically expanded its fund-raising effort in recent months.

It has taken in more than $250,000 since the indictment last fall of two of DeLay's closest political operatives in Texas, according to DeLay's latest financial disclosure statements.

The list of recent donors includes dozens of DeLay's House Republican colleagues, including two lawmakers who were placed on the House Ethics Committee this year, and several of the nation's largest corporations and their executives.

Among the corporate donors to the defense fund is Bacardi USA, the Florida-based rum maker, which also has been indicted in the Texas investigation, and Reliant Energy, another major contributor to a Texas political action committee formed by DeLay that is the focus of the criminal inquiry.

20. I'm sure the bank examined his business plan
No doubt, he assured them he'd make several times that amount back in illegal bribes and kickbacks.
