Tancredo: DeLay exit not bad idea
Coloradan is one of two in the GOP to suggest the majority leader step aside until issues are resolved.

By Mike Soraghan
Denver Post Staff Writer

Washington - Rep. Tom Tancredo says it is "probably not the worst idea" for embattled House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step down while he deals with ethics allegations.

Stepping into a swirling Washington controversy, the Littleton Republican said he doesn't think the current accusations of impropriety against DeLay amount to much. But Tancredo said that from a political perspective, DeLay has handled the ethics issue "stupidly."

"I don't think we should try to oust him," he said in an interview Thursday at the Capitol. "Right now, I would not encourage him to leave. If he chose to resign as majority leader until these matters are resolved, that's probably not the worst idea."

1. Sounds like a man who wants to run for Pres. in 2008.
This is not the same Tom Tancredo from years' past. Something's up his sleeve.

2. Whoop! There It Is!
According to Josh Marshall yesterday, the Delay supporters were saying it was crucial that no other Republicans came out and said something like this in order for Delay to have any hope.

3. Another Portrait in Courage for the repugs.
"Probably not a bad idea, not encouraging, but if he resigned until I found a pair, or the heat was off, then maybe I would probably not intermittantly waffle quite so much, but don't quote me on that."

7. I would prefer Delay be crippled and remain in place.
I want his face to become well-known and enough media scrutiny to hobble his chicanery. He is eminently unlikeable though and could be an asset for us.

Conservative Lawmaker: DeLay Should Quit
By SUZANNE GAMBOA, Associated Press Writer

Friday, April 15, 2005

(04-15) 17:13 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

One of Congress' most conservative members on Friday became the second House Republican to urge Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step aside because of the ethics scrutiny he's facing.

"If the majority leader were to temporarily step aside so that these trumped up charges can be dealt with in a less hostile environment, as they have proven to be an unnecessary distraction, it may be a productive move," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.

Tancredo's comments come after Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays, a moderate Republican, urged DeLay to resign from his leadership position at the beginning of the week. Also, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, said DeLay needs to answer questions about his ethics.

Tancredo, elected in 1998, said he believes all charges against DeLay, R-Texas, "lack merit" and are "being leveled in the hopes of bringing him down and with him, the Republican majority."

Tancredo is known in the House for his tough stand on immigration and has 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union for votes and his position on issues.

15. LOL -- pathetic little weasel!
Oh...if he could just step down for a teensy weensy moment...to prove his innocence of these trumped up charges...which are soooo distracting....

Tancredo sounds like just the sort of sycophant born and bred to be a House Republican.

18. Lawmaker: Temporary resignation may be OK (Tom DeLay)
Mods- searched for this one in LBN and did not see it. Please delete if dupe. (I'm wary about posting in LBN as I've never done it before, so be gentle with me)

WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., said Friday that it "may be a productive move" for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step aside while charges against him are investigated, but added that he believes the accusations are "trumped up" by Democrats.

Tancredo issued the statement after The Denver Post quoted him as saying that although he does not favor ousting DeLay, "If he chose to resign as majority leader until these matters are resolved, that's probably not the worst idea."

Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., called on DeLay last weekend to step down, after news reports raised questions about whether lobbyists paid for three overseas trips he took, in possible violation of House rules.

House leaders are scrambling to preserve support for DeLay, R-Sugar Land, as more of their home-state news outlets carry coverage of questions about his travel and past relationships with lobbyists. DeLay was admonished by the House ethics committee last year on three separate matters.
