Dean Outlines Plans for Support in States
Dean Outlines Plans for Support in States
----------------------
Friday April 08, 2005 4:48pm
----------------------
Washington (AP) - Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said Friday that the national party will invest almost half a million dollars in state parties in Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota and West Virginia. All four states were won by President Bush (website - news - bio) in the 2004 presidential election.

"This is just the beginning," Dean told state Democratic chairs at a meeting of their association in Little Rock, Ark. "We will announce additional investments in the weeks ahead."

Dean has been to 14 states in his two months as chairman and has pledged to build state parties all across the nation, including in states dominated by Republicans.

"We have to show up if we're going to win, and we're going to rebuild and empower our state parties," Dean said when he announced the $465,000 investment.

2. Hmm, I'm optimistic, but...

that "Just show up" theory hasn't really been tested before, so I'm not quite sure how it's going to turn out.

3. Tested how?

You think that he implies some sort of guarantee? Hardly.

Here's the logic:

If you don't get someone on the ballot to run for your party, you are guaranteed to lose. GUARANTEED. Conversely, you put someone on the ballot, you have something to say and say it, you have 50% chance of winning (all other things being equal -- which they aren't going to be necessarily, but I'n sharing the basic logic with you here).

10. There is no "just"
He didn't say we need to "just show up". He said "We have to show up if we're going to win....." That sounds to me like the showing up part is just the beginning. Even so it will be a huge improvement over where we were which was not even bothering to show up at all in some states.

11. Once upon a time Texas used to be Democratic.
It's a great state with great people.

It's been taken hostage by privatization, big bidness and pretty bigoted, misogynistic policy.

The state needs help and Texans need help.

5. From Chicago I've been watching the Dems fight in Alabama w/o DNC support
That is one state which could easily be turned if someone in the DNC would just pay attention.

8. Dean's doing what we expect a DNC Chair
to do. Hustle, hustle. Get the word out, speak to groups. He is so good at that, speaks with conviction and is knowledgeable about the issues that concern everyone.
