Poll: Bush Standing With Public Weakening

By WILL LESTER
The Associated Press
Friday, April 8, 2005; 6:15 AM

WASHINGTON - President Bush's standing with the public is slumping just three months into his final term, but Americans have an even lower regard for the job being done by Congress.

Bush's job approval is at 44 percent, with 54 percent disapproving. Only 37 percent have a favorable opinion of the work being done by the Republican-controlled Congress, according to an AP-Ipsos poll.

Record high gasoline prices, nervousness about the future of Social Security, the ongoing Iraq war and the Terri Schiavo case are all contributing, political analysts said.

-snip-
The number supporting Bush's handling of some domestic issues dipped between March and April, to 42 percent for the economy and 38 percent for issues like education and health care, according to the poll conducted for The Associated Press by Ipsos-Public Affairs.

1. But you'll still hear him referred to as . . .
"The popular war-time president." I think it was Howard Kurtz who used that locution just last week.

He works hard for the money
So hard for it, honey!

CNN was using it for, like, every other story and I finally just turned them off.

It was really not constructive to sit there yelling at the television. ;-)

3. george w. bush is not a leader
"nervousness about the future of Social Security"

What kind of leader creates a false panic without a solution? That's Little Boots, squatting in the White House, clueless in D.C. No LIHOP or MIHOP this time, boy, don't even think about it.

4. Very good news!
You'd think the people of this country would be sick of the repukes by now. But then again, it's WHO counts the votes.

5. 54% disapproval...
So much for the vaunted "mandate" (not that it ever existed).

and those who voted for the creepy bastard owe the country an apology for dragging the country very close to the brink.

a fact of history that i hope never repeats itself.

8. That's the problem with Fascism
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 10:09 AM by joefree1
It's only popular for the moment. Then the war drums grate on your nerves, the lies can't drown out reality, and God no longer seems to smile on your hOILy war.

10. Yep, but by then it's usually too late.
Fascists are very quick to consolidate power. The ONLY thing standing between Bush and full-on dictatorship is the Federal judiciary, IMO--that's why they're so hot to stack the courts. It's not about abortion, it's about martial law, perpetual war, corporate hegemony, and a lifetime "presidency" for George W Bush.

11. Poll: Bush, Congress Approval Slumping
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=652602

No, Ms. Bowman. Democrats don't control anything. Therefore, there is no disaffection with Democrats as they are powerless. If the public hates what the government is doing, guess what? That means they hate what REPUBLICANS are doing, because REPUBLICANS control all three branches. Understand that, Ms. Bowman?

------------------------------------------------------

<snip>

WASHINGTON Apr 8, 2005 — President Bush's standing with the public is slumping just three months into his final term, but Americans have an even lower regard for the job being done by Congress. Bush's job approval is at 44 percent, with 54 percent disapproving. Only 37 percent have a favorable opinion of the work being done by the Republican-controlled Congress, according to an AP-Ipsos poll.

Bush's job approval was at 49 percent in January, while Congress was at 41 percent.

"This is a pretty sour spring," said Karlyn Bowman, a public opinion analyst at the conservative-leaning American Enterprise Institute. "People are not very impressed by what Bush is doing or by what Congress is doing Democrats or Republicans."

Record high gasoline prices, nervousness about the future of Social Security, the ongoing Iraq war and the Terri Schiavo case are all contributing, political analysts said.

13. The big question...
Will this actually translate into republicans being voted out of office in 2006?

I'm not so sure. Plenty of people say they are dissatisfied, but when push comes to shove, they decide that the GOP is still the lesser of two evils.

14. This is classic rightwing media spin
Notice they have a bad poll, so they go to a "conservative" woman to get her spin on it, then they quote her... with NO REFUTATION OR BALANCE.

So the average idiot is left with the false impression that the public is pissed off at Democrats too.

The media does nothing but present rightwing spin. The loons who claim that the media is liberal have their heads up their ass.

16. as I told my friend who was complaining about gas prices;
"you voted for him, what did you expect?" I still don't understand how working people could vote for someone who's goal is to destroy the middle class....The Repubs have never done anything for the working "man" and never will.

17. What I note about this article was they interviewed 4 Repubs first...
... all trying to rationalize Bush's performance and low ratings.

Then they throw us the "bone " of two Democrats: one criticizing "Congress" (which it has already been made clear contains DEMOCRATS, TOO), and the other saying that Democrats need to do a better job.

Gee, you'd almost think the article was pro-Bush.

Regarding Ed Rollins: NO you moron, this is not in Bush's "normal" ratings range. It's his LOWEST EVER, and the LOWEST EVER for a second-term president at this point in the term (by far). If it's close to what he's been polling lately, that's because he's been polling LOW!
