HAVANA (Reuters) - The Reverend Jesse Jackson plans to travel to Cuba to promote U.S. trade with the Communist-run island, a friend said on Thursday

-

"He thinks we should bring the walls down and do business with Cuba," said Alabama businessman Gregory Calhoun, owner of the distribution company Calhoun Foods, who spoke to Jackson from Havana on Wednesday.

"He said he would come to Cuba and told me to work on the dates for him," Calhoun said before signing food sales worth $14.3 million.

James Gomez, director of international affairs for Jackson's organization, Rainbow/PUSH, said of the proposed Cuba trip: "We haven't finalized the details yet."

1. There would be Ice hockey in hell before the republicans allow that
The south Florida Cubans need to keep Castro in power so they can use fear as a tool to keep the Cubano-Americanos in line.

3. Something is needed to break the chokehold Bush has on Cuba
With our Congress gaining more votes 2 times a year, (getting healthy majorities) to lift the travel ban, end the embargo, etc., etc., only to be deceitfully killed in committee by Bush's Cuban "exile" Congresscritters before they can be included in the appropriate bills, it's going to happen the very SECOND that Republican fascist cretin gets pried out of the White House.

His own party's Senator John Warner fired up a National Bipartisan Commission on Cuba in 1998, with very distinguished names of both parties, and past Presidential cabinet members participating in working on forming a more relaxed and intelligent Cuba policy.

Currently we've got a Congressional Cuba Working Group with 44 members (22 of each party) or possibly more since I last heard about it. They are in NO WAY going to give up on a newer, workable Cuba policy, no matter what Bush does.

Hearing Jesse Jackson isn't going to hide behind the curtains just because Bush pretends Cuba belongs to him and the Miami "exile" reactionaries is just what the doctor ordered. Thanks too much, Mika!

7. Considering the campaign money..
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 07:30 AM by Mika
.. that pours in to candidates on both sides of the Cuba sanctions issue, I have my doubts as to whether the policy will ever change. Why would candidates on either side want to cut off the campaign cash cow? :(

:hi:

4. New Contracts signed by Alimport with US company
New Contracts signed by Alimport with US company

Havana, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) Cuban food-importing enterprise -ALIMPORT- signed new agreements with US company Calhoun Foods, based in Alabama, for the purchase of pork and poultry meat for 14.3 million dollars.
(snip)

According to the contract, Cuba will buy more than one thousand 500 tons of pork meat and about eight thousand 400 tons of poultry, while it is expected that during the day new accords are signed for a total of 20 million dollars.
Alvarez highlighted the quality of products presented at the exhibition and assured the initiative will allow to expand food lines his country buys today from the United States, despite the blockade and the recent restrictions imposed by the Treasury Department.

He also sent a greeting to US farmers and businesspeople, specially those from the State of Alabama as well as to the Black Group (afroamerican producers) with strong participation in Calhoun Foods, opposed to restrictive measures against Cuba.
(snip)

He also advanced that reverend Jesse Jackson will visit Havana soon heading a group of Afroamerican businesspeople to continue promotion of business and friendly relations with the island.
