Yale president refuses union recognition

NEW HAVEN - A student organization representing about 25 percent of Yale University graduate students on Wednes-day promised a strike vote if President Richard Levin refused to recognize it as a union within a week.

Despite the threat, university officials said they would not reverse their long-standing policy against union recognition.

If, as organizers expect, the strike is approved April 13, graduate students would not teach classes for five days beginning April 18.

Organizers believe graduate students need a union to help them negotiate for better wages and health care. Most graduate students spend 10 to 12 semesters at Yale and are normally required to teach undergraduates for up to four semesters. <snip>

First they piss off women, now they're pissing off grad students. We work hard to keep our grad union at my school. I hope the students stick with it!
