Senator urges inquiry of GOP aide's actions at Bush gathering

By Tillie Fong, Rocky Mountain News
April 7, 2005

U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar has asked for a federal and a state investigation into whether a Republican Party staffer should be charged with impersonating a Secret Service agent at a Denver town hall meeting on Social Security held by President Bush last month.

"I supported laws as (state) Attorney General, to keep people from impersonating law enforcement officers," said Salazar, D-Colorado, on Wednesday.

>snipOn Tuesday, Salazar sent a letter asking for an investigation to Dennis Schindel, with the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of the Treasury, and to Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrisey.

The request for an investigation comes one day after U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., joined U.S. Rep. Raul M. Grijalva, D-Ariz., in asking the House Government Reform Committee to investigate several recent incidents in which citizens were removed from presidential events in Colorado, Arizona and North Dakota because of their political beliefs.

Dare I hope this is gwb's watergate? Maybe it's more closely related to Capone's tax evasion. Everyone knew Capone was a thug, but applying the tax evasion laws brought him down.

Maybe the SS impersonators or civil right violations will be his undoing. I can dream, can't I! MKJ

right thing to do, (inquiery) yet it's reletively minor in the greater scheme of things.

At most, an aid or two will take the fall and it probably won't make a huge impact nationally.

2. You know...
I'm wondering if we could all get together, make a quantity buy, and send all the Republican staff members red shirts?

Just a thought.

4. If outing a CIA agent didn't bring down Bush-coop, the this is unlikely
to go very far. This can be passed off as the lone act of an overzealous volunteer. I'm glad that it is being investigated, but I am not holding my breath.

5. My admittedly somewhat weak argument...it's the pattern of more
than one event in more than one state, with the concurrent request for a federal investigation.

If nothing else, it will slow or stop our taxpayer funds from being spent on the charade that the WH calls "town hall meetings." MKJ

9. The outing of the agent happened at the height of B*S's popularity
I'm glad too they're not letting this go. A house of cards collapses with but one card falling.

12. Degette is pushing for the congressional investigation..along with
a congressman from AZ. Finally, the Dem backbone becomes evident. (Although, Diana Degette has been consistent in her opposition to gwb's policies; finally, her congressional colleagues are supporting her)

14. Keep it up on all fronts
Yes, the public has a defective outrage meter, but eventually they might get the point. Seemed to be somewhat of a turn when it came to Schiavo-Delay etc.
