Lawmakers seek end to pesticide program testing on kidsWASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- A Florida senator said Thursday that he was placing a hold on the nomination of Stephen Johnson to become administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency because of a pesticide program involving children in the state.
Johnson, who is currently serving as the EPA's acting administrator, is a 24-year veteran of the agency and was nominated by President Bush to become administrator in March.
"Exercising my right in this confirmation process, I am placing a hold on the nomination of Mr. Johnson's confirmation, because I'm going to stand up for the health and safety of children in my state," Sen. Bill Nelson said at a press conference.
Nelson, a Democrat, is the second senator to place a hold on Johnson's nomination.
The legislator added that he would "use every parliamentary procedure that is available" to hold up the nomination until Johnson agrees to cancel the program.
