10 million kids die by age 5 - WHO

By Deborah Condon

Worldwide, over 3.3 million babies are stillborn every year, while a further four million die within 28 days of their birth. However the causes of many of these deaths are avoidable, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.

It has just published its World Health Report 2005 to coincide with World Health Day today (April 7). The theme of the day is 'make every mother and child count'.

According to the report, over six million children die before their fifth birthday throughout the world, while 529,000 women die during pregnancy, during childbirth or soon after their babies are born.

5. The six major causes of death are:
six conditions account for between 70% and 90% of these deaths. They are:

-Neonatal conditions, e.g. being born prematurely, infections.

-Acute lower respiratory infections, mostly pneumonia.

-Diarrhea.

-Malaria.

-Measles.

-HIV/AIDS.

Additionally and most importantly:

The report says that poverty is a major issue, adding that this also affects the 'rich' countries of the European region, i.e. the EU member states. This would certainly appear to be the case in Ireland, where an estimated 90,000 children live in consistent poverty, according to the End Child Poverty Coalition.

6. Valuing Life - What a joke
The jokesters (aka bastards) who run this country ranted about the value of life for how many days? Was it ten, fifteen, or more?

An average of 27,297 children died each one of those days. So let us conservatively call it as 270,000 children dying preventable deaths while the United States agonized over Teri Shiavo.

Is this a sick, fucked up country or what?

9. heartless bastard checking in
i know a woman in her 80's who is one of two kids out of 9 to survive childhood. and that's in minnesota in the 20's! this was NORMAL.

historically, low birth & early childhood survival rates are the norm. it is only recently that medical advances have allowed more children to survive birth & the early stages of life. hence the exploding human population of the planet, growing exponentially, crowding out other animals, decimating ecosystems.

so, if these kids in the report had survived, then had 6, 7 kids themselves in 30 years, and so on, would that be a GOOD THING? are there not enough people in india? too many exotic trees left in madagascar? not enough rain forest being burned by settlers in brazil?

overpopulation is a real problem in many many poor countries.

11. I understand what you are saying...BUT
If the infant/early chilhood mortality rate was decreased these women would have less children.
That is exactly what happened during the 20th century in the US.

Once women could reasonably expect their children to survive past 5 they quit having so many.

Working to reduce infant mortality will cause a short-term spike in population, but it will reduce population and suffering in the long term.

14. i agree with you... BUT
women don't get to make this choice in many societies in which poverty, patriarchy, and religion combine to take that power away from them.

lets look at our own polygamous mormon families. although access to health care is available, their birth rate does not fall. god tells the creepy old fucks to keep making babies, and the godless, 2 kid limousine liberals up in seattle & portland subsidise them with federal tax dollars/welfare.

and so it is through much of the world.
