DOD lobbies Congress for money to encourage enlistment

Defense Department officials lobbied Tuesday for higher hazardous duty pay and larger enlistment bonuses on Capitol Hill as senators expressed concerns over the long-term implications of recent recruiting problems.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see where this is heading,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Personnel subcommittee.

So says the only senator still serving in the Guard/Reserves. He managed to serve stateside as a Staff Judge Advocate during the first Gulf War. Will he be so lucky the second time around?

dude, we need to, like--you know, increase the amount of money we pay our army guys so that, like, more of them will sign up and junk. We just won't, like, mention that--you know--we can increase their tours of duty indefinitely.
