Here we go again.

But I'm going to presume it was not on an Indian reservation so I'm sure the media will be all over it.

And since it was Texas, I wonder how long before dubya makes some nonsensical proclamation on the sanctity of life and why we need to allow more guns in society.

Hope we make it to June w/o a new school record.

52. hunters are actually TARGETING kids
Since the percentage of hunters in the population goes down every year, there are all sorts of efforts to get new groups interested, especially children and women.

A few years ago I attended a Safari Club International expo. These are the big "trophy" hunters who feel the more endangered species they kill, the better they are ... anyway, the number of programs for kids to learn how to use guns was ASTOUNDING.

What you're seeing there is the desperation of a dying "sport".

59. Hunting is a national disgrace...
Every state's hunting program costs a lot more money to administrate than it takes in...and that's not taking into account the actual cost to the public of hauling injured hunters out of the woods, etc. A few years ago, one of the most destructive fires that hit California (whole towns were wiped out and several people were killed and injured) was started by a hunter who got lost and decided lighting the underbrush would signal rescuers.....

The entire rationale for deer hunting is that the deer population in the wild needs to be reduced...but a huge chunk of hunting takes place on "deer farms" where captive animals (sometimes disease-ridden) are raised for their trophy qualities...

And although every newsstand is filled with "noble hunter" stroke books and TV has plenty of hunting propaganda, any time the slightest criticism of this idiotic sport is raised in public, hunters en masse whine that the entire media is against them and demand that no more criticism be published.

Actually, the man involved in the shooting is not a student, but a guy in his mid-40s. Also, the guy shot is not only the football coach, but the athletic director for the high school.

Law enforcement officials have apparently been in contact with the shooter, who is said to be deranged and suicidal.

Make no mistake--especially in East Texas.
Many many parents of girls hire pitching coaches for over $100 an hour when their kids are 7 and 8 years old. These are people who can ill afford these luxuries.
For most kids in these little towns, it's the only way out and the parents will fight to give their kid the advantage--I guess some will even kill.

My daughter did competitive cheerleading for a few years -- those folks are too danged intense. Same goes for much of the sports teams hereabouts.

I've lived in the "middle of Dallas" for a very long time and I've never ever considered Canton to be in the "Greater Dallas" area. As a matter of fact I would believe that most residents of Canton take great pride in not being a part of the "greater Dallas" area!

of the working-aged people in that county, though, commute to Dallas to work. It's 60 miles to Dallas and even closer to the eastern 'burbs thereof.

I had been thinking of Van Zandt County commuters a week or two ago as the gas prices went up another 10 cents in one day. That will eventually become unsustainable and they'll have to move closer to the Metroplex.

31. Breaking News: Shooting at Canton High School (near Tyler TX)
Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 12:30 PM by Ilsa
A friend of mine that I've referred to here on DU called to tell me he left the nearby school where he teaches just before lockdown was imposed. The rumor is that the perpetrator was spouting off about it the night before at a party. Here is the news from the Tyler Morning Telegraph:

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=14302095&BRD=1994&PAG=461&dept_id=226369&rfi=6

CANTON - The Canton High School athletic director was the apparent victim of a shooting on campus this morning, and officials were searching for a suspect.

Law enforcement officials responded to a report of shots fired Canton High School, and early reports indicate Gary Joe Kinne, the Canton High athletic director, was trans-ported by helicopter to a Tyler hospital, where his condition is unknown.

Kinne was reportedly shot at the school's athletic field house in Canton.

The Governor's Office of Homeland Security identified the shooter as Jeffrey Doyle Robertson, father of a Canton High School student. According to the Associated Press, the suspect fired an AK-47 rifle and fled the scene in a 2004 black Dodge pickup.

(On Edit: sorry about the double post. I have a friend that teaches in that county, and his school got locked down. He got his information from others in the area. Canton is known for having huge antique fairs every month.)

Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 02:04 PM by tubbacheez
The NRA probably considered him an exemplary gun owner until he pulled the trigger.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&e=9&u=/ap/coach_shot

CANTON, Texas - The father of a high school football player shot and wounded the team's coach with an assault rifle Thursday and fled in a pickup loaded with weapons, claiming to have a hit list, state officials said.

Schools in the district were locked down while police searched for the shooter. Officers had weapons drawn near a truck that was found about two hours after the shooting and apparently belonged to suspect Jeffrey Doyle Robertson.

(snip)

An athlete's father said Robertson had threatened to kill his son last year over an on-field teasing.

"He's a very high-strung, hot-tempered individual," said Steve Smith, a Canton business owner.

ALLEGED SHOOTER CALLED "TICKING BOMB"

CANTON - People familiar with Jeffrey Doyle Robertson, the suspect in Thursday's school shooting, said there was no mistaking the signs that led up to the incident.

Canton newcomer Catherine Whitlock said events that fueled the attack actually began last August as a dispute between her son and another teenager during football practice.

-snip-

"He (Robertson's son) called his father, and he came up here," she said. "He was going to jump my son and the coaches intervened. Since that happened, he (Robertson) was barred from going on the property."

But Robertson returned Thursday and allegedly shot Coach Gary Joe Kinne - one of the athletic officials who intervened in the attack - once in the chest at close range, Canton police said.

56. Root cause analysis?
So we have a loony who goes nuts over football, has a brain tumor and is a nasty drunk.

Hate to say it guys but I don't think gun control is the answer.

I'm all for registration and testing and licenses and all that - but some people are just plain nuts and as many examples demonstrate you can be nuts with a knife, a baseball bat, a tire iron or whatever else just like you can be nuts with a gun.

I wonder how many of you would favor strict mandatory psychological tests and potential involuntary confinement for those deemed to be dangerous? Isn't the man's obvious mental instability the real root cause?

A nut with a gun is dangerous yep - but a nut without a gun is too. I'd suggest concentrating on the nuts rather than the guns. They are sometimes, but not always, connected.

63. Well. They wanted to carry guns to CHURCH...
now they wonder why shootings take place in schools. What's next... shoot out at churches and at judges.

They reap what they sow.
