USS Carl Vinson F/A-18s Strike Insurgents in Iraq

"ABOARD USS CARL VINSON, At sea (NNS) -- Strike fighter aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, flying from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in the Persian Gulf, attacked an enemy insurgent location east of Baghdad, Iraq, April 4.

F/A-18 Hornets from Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 154 and 147 dropped two 500-pound laser-guided bombs, striking the enemy position in support of Iraqi and coalition forces."

OK - If Freedom is on the March, then why in the hell are we still having to launch F/A-18 Strikes against Baghdad?? Didn't "Shock and Awe" do the trick? And isn't this also a little like killing a fly with a shot-gun?

Edited to Add: What is really going on over there in Iraq? If only we had an actual independent press anymore. Is the weather getting nicer? Is there a surge in the violence that was supposed to end almost 2 years ago?? "My Kingdom for a Reporter that Gives a Shit"!

1. Look at it this way:
You generally do not use close air support on secure areas. Or near them. Generally.

2. Dahr Jamail on continued bombing
"ER-MEANWHILE, ONE of the things missing from the U.S. media is reporting on the increasingly frequent bombing of Iraq by the U.S.

DJ-THAT’S A very important point. It definitely is one of the most underreported things in Iraq. Daily, there are many, many air missions being flown, and huge amounts of bombs being dropped. In fact, the vast majority of Iraqi civilians killed have died as a result of U.S. warplanes dropping bombs."

3. forget an independent press
Also, you are quoting Navy News, which is a government news source. What do you expect from the propagandists?

4. A Couple of Things
One, I am in the Navy, and despite the fact that this comes from Navy News, it is still news.

I think most Americans would be shocked to learn that we are still using air strikes in a country where "Mission Accomplished" was declared almost 2 years ago.

But, I know. Michael Jackson, the Pope and Terri Schiavo are more important. It's sad that news today is more interested in bringing in ratings numbers than actually reporting the news.

It's the OJ Syndrome.

5. Things must be worse, not better.
I am no military expert, but bombing villages from an aircraft carrier two years after the invasion was declared a success doesn't seem like a sign that the population has really accepted the new situation. But shooting journalists has been successful as far as controlling news goes.

7. Just from random memory,
but that would seem to be the type of bomb for getting a compound house without blowing up the neigborhood...hit it once, and then hit it again.
