DeLay defense fund donations slow

Aides say drop due to reduction in legal fees; political attacks mount

07:10 AM CDT on Thursday, April 7, 2005

By TODD J. GILLMAN / The Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON – Donations to Majority Leader Tom DeLay's defense fund have slowed considerably in the last few months. Some of his critics hope to cut the money flow even more with a new line of attack launched Wednesday demanding that corporate donors stop covering his legal bills.

The Tom DeLay Legal Expense Trust took in about $50,000 during the first quarter of 2005 – far below the pace that pumped in $430,000 during the second half of last year.

"We will make sure that we have enough resources to mount a vigorous response to all these attacks that the Democrats continue to launch at us," said DeLay spokesman Dan Allen.

DeLay alumni earn at least $45 million for lobbying firms
Aides and allies dismissed the idea that the slowdown in fund-raising for legal bills reflects slipping popularity. Rather, they said, his legal fees have simply subsided.

But the political attacks have not abated.

1. People are realizing they're dumping their money down a hole
Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 08:26 AM by Atman
You donate when you're pretty sure you've got a good case. Everyone knows DeLay is going down...KKKarl put out the word. They need a high-profile scapegoat right now. The Pope is gonna be officially gone after the weekend, with no new pain and suffering for the WH to exploit. They need a sacrificial lamb. Who the hell is going to donate to a legal defense fund when they know there is little chance of DeLay surviving this?

11. Article translation: Rove has taken over the purse strings...
Hope Delay's bug exterminating skills aren't too rusty. He may be needing them sooner than expected.

2. Rats over the side.
There is some great potential for some Michael Moore style mischief here. Would they take a contribution from Satanists for Delay?

3. whining about the "attacks" from Democrats
funny, didn't hear any complaints from him or any other member of the GOP when they were witch-hunting Clinton for 8 years - and he didn't do anything close to what DeLay's done . . . fucking hypocrites

4. What a bunch of unvarnished horses***
SInce when did DeLay ever stop collecting money because he felt that he had enough? Yes, *that's* the point of power. "Oh, no. No more money for me. I want to *limit* the influence of the Christian Taliban." What an bunch of shameless f***ing liars. And yet it is a real pleasure to watch them start to squirm.

7. I found one of Delay's letters at my in-law's house...
I do believe that they gave him some money too. At the same time I found that Unfit for Command book on there bookshelf. They never read anything but they read that. I was really suprised and saddened too. They really are nice people and do a lot for us. I know that they are conservative, but I thought it was how they were raised, they grew up in that kind of world. I have been noticing a lot of repuke mail in there house and of course they watch faux 24/7, (they do turn it off when I am there). I can't believe that they would donate to Delay though. I guess they are just too ignorant to figure things out...

8. interesting...
How many congressional leaders need to keep a fully-funded "defense fund" going? Doesn't that say something all by itself?

I swear these Republicans would vote for the devil himself if he had an R next to his name.

"We will make sure that we have enough resources to mount a vigorous response to all these attacks that the Democrats continue to launch at us," said DeLay spokesman Dan Allen.

If this shithead does go to trial, he'll just whine and complain about how he's being persecuted by the judicial branch, even if all of the judges involved were appointed by fucking Reagan.

But the political attacks have not abated.

Political attacks? DeLay has politically attacked every goddamn institution and person in this country at least once. I'm sure if you read all his bile, there'd be something in there singling you out by name for being an activist citizen or a member of the plot against is legal defense fund or you killed a kitten or something.

12. The money vote drifting away from DeLay?
That's extraordinarily bad news for old Tom. When the money starts looking for another place to land, it means that folks aren't even interested in hedging their bets down the line on the off-chance that DeLay will somehow survive this imbroglio intact.

But it's not over yet. Keep after him, folks.

13. Donations to GOP leader DeLay's legal defense fund slow
Donations to GOP leader DeLay's legal defense fund slow

Excerpted from the Morning News.
By TODD J. GILLMAN / The Dallas Morning News
--------------------------
WASHINGTON – Donations to Majority Leader Tom DeLay's defense fund have slowed considerably in the last few months.

Aides and allies dismissed the idea that the slowdown in fund-raising for legal bills reflects slipping popularity. Rather, they said, his legal fees have simply subsided.

In recent weeks, leading conservatives have expressed concern that the drumbeat of allegations about Mr. DeLay's foreign travel and fundraising tactics have tainted his image and threatened his political future. The latest barrage came Wednesday from the Center for American Progress. The Democratic think tank, founded by Bill Clinton's former chief of staff, John Podesta, launched a campaign to try to embarrass corporations that have helped pay Mr. DeLay's legal bills. Its new Web site, www.dropthehammer.org, spotlights donations from American Airlines, Bacardi USA, Nissan USA, RJ Reynolds and Verizon, and some of the legislation those companies have sought help with over the years.

14. American Airlines eh?
I'm a frequent flier, and a regular customer.

I think it's time to write them a little letter, and explain why I'll be flying on Alaska air from now on.

Brent C. Perry

Jones' legal fund, established with Davis and Cammarata, raised almost $300,000 between 1994 and mid-1997. The legal fund has collected about $110,000 more than expenses since last summer, said Houston attorney Brent C. Perry.

On the donor list..GOPUSA's/Talon's Robert Eberle

telling them Tom DeLay is a disgrace to Texas and a disgrace to America and that I would not use their services if they continue to contribute financially to his defense fund.

Out ya go, tom. It may only be a matter of time now. The sharks are circling. And the support money is drying up. GOOD!

BTW - the story mentions a drumbeat. THAT'S what is needed. THAT'S how this stuff gets done. And who says the drumbeat has to stop there?

18. His Legal Bills have subsided?
I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that's a blatant lie. And not even just because a repuke said it. I think his legal bills HAVE to be rising, and there will be more on the way from what I've been reading.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

20. Yeah, and I'm Contradicta Rice. It's just more spin. They're trying,
and quite desperately I might add, to spin straw into gold.

In fact, that's a good name for the republi-CON party - the Rumplestilskin party. Spinning. Always trying to spin straw into gold. For themselves, that is.

tom delay's legal bills are NOT going anywhere but up. That's the only direction they CAN go, since he remains on defense, with more and more (NOT fewer) fires to put out. His problems are GROWING, NOT shrinking. And when that happens, there inevitably are more legal bills, because this guy needs his lawyers more and more as every day passes. Perhaps it's a subtle message to donors to kick it up a notch, because the guy's coffers are in need of refilling.

But when you start emanating a bad smell, fewer people want to hang around. Unless of course they're vultures - that like the smell of rotting carcasses. tom delay is starting to give off loser stench. I'd say he's in big trouble. They may try to talk him into pulling a trent lott side-step, but I doubt his ego would allow any such thing.
