Janklow, supporters honor Daschle (ArgusLeader story)...

<snip>

Abbott, McGovern and Ziolkowski had kind words for Daschle. But some of the most powerful remarks came from Janklow and Neuharth.

After recounting Daschle's Senate accomplishments for South Dakota, and humorously punctuating the litany with the refrain, "I'm not here to give him credit for that," Janklow turned serious.

He said Daschle personally intervened to bring 42 Filipino refugees to South Dakota, women and their families who Janklow said his mother met on a medical mission and who had escaped a massacre.

Janklow called Daschle "a person who never forgot where he came from, who never forgot who he was and who never forgot that his mission was to use his God-given talents.

"You might hate his politics, but he is one of the classiest guys I know."

He likened himself and Daschle to "a Catholic priest and a rabbi living next door. We long ago gave up trying to convert each other. We're just trying to make the neighborhood a better place to live."

Neuharth took a sharper tone. He criticized South Dakota voters who turned against native sons Hubert Humphrey and McGovern in the 1968 and 1972 presidential elections.

"Everyone knows now our country would have been much better off if either Hubert Humphrey or George McGovern would have beat Richard Milhouse Nixon," said Neuharth, who likened their defeats to Daschle's last year.

"I say in that election, shame on those selfish, special-interest out-of-staters who pumped large money and bigger lies into South Dakota to mislead voters and defeat Tom."
