Ressam to be sentenced this month for plotting to blow up LA airport

SEATTLE, WASH. - An Algerian who entered the United States from Canada planning to blow up Los Angeles airport five years ago is finally set to be sentenced on April 27, justice officials told AFP Wednesday.

The so-called 'Millennium Bomber' Ahmed Ressam will learn his sentence after years of delays that were aimed at ensuring his help in cracking other terrorism cases, including the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on US targets.

Ressam had faced a sentence of up to 130 years in jail, but struck a deal with prosecutors that is expected to see his sentence reduced to 27 years, sources said.

U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, who will sentence Ressam, called the information he provided to the government "startlingly helpful."
