THE NATION
GOP Pounces on Byrd Link to Liberal Group
Republicans say they plan to make MoveOn's fundraising for the veteran Democratic senator an issue in his reelection effort.
By Ronald Brownstein
Times Staff Writer

April 6, 2005

WASHINGTON — With an early fundraising blitz, the online liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org has shown both its potential as a Democratic asset and a Republican target in the 2006 elections.

In less than three days last week, the group's political action committee raised from its members nearly $833,000 for Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.), who next year could face his first competitive race in decades.

The amount represented more than three-fourths of the total that Byrd collected between Jan. 1 and March 31, and was the most money MoveOn has raised for one candidate at one time, according to the group's officials.
.......

But the torrent of MoveOn money drew quick fire from Republicans, who signaled that they intended to make the group's support an issue not only in West Virginia but also in other states.

"This organization is not a mainstream organization," said Brian Nick, communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

2. It's so shameless that after the DeLay scandals
and him raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in unethical ways, that they would jump on this totally public and ethical means of fundraising.

what's one of the most annoying rationlizations Cons use when they finally are forced to admit that thier side is dirty in some scandel?

..... But Clinton (or some other Dem) did it too!

Of course whether the Dem in question did do anything of the sort , or if what the Dem did is anywhere near comparable to the repubs orhow any of this excuses repub scandels..is just a silly side note to the Cons who use this strategy. Which is most of them.

So now whenever we bring up delays years of back room deals and selng access to the highest bidder and breaking electoral laws and the Repub attempts to sidestep thier own ethic laws... the Cons can say that Byrd once had a fundraiser by some group they don't like.

Cons can feel not quite so dirty because they beleive that some Dem may have done something sorta similar once.

When you're a Con, Hypocrisy is it's own reward!

7. Love this simple retort by Byrd--
"This is an organization made up of people from all walks of life," he said, according to a tape provided by his office. "I'm proud that they have supported me."
